The declining number of English majors

Why pore over dead white guy drivel like Ulysses when you can read The Hate U Give for class like your middle school cousin is doing? This is what super woke left wing SJWs have done to once-great English departments across the country. And it's why serious students don't major in it anymore.

Go to any English Course Catalog for Fall 2024 and point me one that isn't teaching British Writers, Shakespeare, American Writers, Joyce/Modernists. And, then come back to me when you inevitably fail, because it just isn't true.

Good thing he has three degrees in African American Studies. Being a writer isn't being a contributor to English or literature. Kendi has only worked in roles for History and African American Studies, because he's not...an English Professor.

It is trash lit, but it won't going into the dustbin of history anytime soon.

It's not great literature but it's good story telling. I'm not a HP fan but my kids *loved* it. They were voracious readers as kids.

The idea that college is trade school seems to be one of the most immutable of the lower-middle class misconceptions.

Most of the kids are not trust fund kids, so they need jobs.

If they really needed jobs, they'd go into a trade, get an ASN/Rad Tech/Construction Management associates, or do the many other options you have before getting a degree. They are lazy and want to delay working for four years by partying and BSing through school.

Average salary is higher with college degree for long term and also more opportunities.
College + job is the best.
By the way, yes most kids really need jobs.
What are you trying to say??

The kids of this generation are much dumber than previous ones and shouldn't be getting degrees. Colleges are lowering their standards to get them to pass (B is the new C!) and many of these students should be working before ever even thinking of going into a collegiate institution. Many have no respect for education, but somehow also want 4.0s and some even want to go to grad schools with a terrible consumerist mindset about University. If your objective is money, there's so many jobs out there that do not require a degree that you can use as a launchpad to a successful career.

Wasn’t the exact same thing said about the Millenials…ie, your generation?

When I was growing up, every adult in my life was urgently rushing me into college. I don’t think there was any other option presented.

People say we’re lazy for sure, but the grade inflation is exponentially worse than when I was in college. Higher Ed is in a significantly worse place than when I went to college, and I only say this because I work in higher Ed now and am shocked everyday by students.

There are 3000+ 4 year colleges. I agree to an extent that I personally think that there are so many useless degrees and colleges. However we have a system like that, it's their choice.

Objective is to have a lifelong career and they make big investment(time and money)
You don't define things(education, college, objective) for others and decide for lives of others.

People are stuck in the idea that you must get a job that is directly in your major, which is silly.
An English major is prep for anything that requires intense reading and writing. Or, you can move on to almost any grad program - including sciences if you did the pre-reqs. I know English majors who went into medicine and into tech.
