It’s cute and fun to look younger than your age when you’re younger, but I’m 36 and find it terribly annoying at this point. I feel like I am still dismissed at work as being in my 20s, even though I speak confidently, act professionally, and have 15 years of experience in my field. I work in a male-dominated industry, which doesn’t help matters. In a professional context, at least, I do sometimes wish I looked my age.
I stay out of the sun, get light preventive Botox, and am a bit chubby with a rounder face. Genetics plays a big part here. My mother is gorgeous in her mid-60s with very few wrinkles. |
| I look younger now at 40 and like it but it's a new thing for me. I'm the type that looked 25 at 14, 25 at 25, 25 at 30, 25 at 35, and 25 at 40. I've never had a "cute" look but I am thin and have been relying on Retin-a and sunscreen/peels/lasers since 12 years old so I've sort of stayed the same while others have aged around me. I'm not deluded enough to think I actually look that much younger, but I have fewer age "tells" than others so I get why people see younger at a glance. |
+1000 At least 90% of people who think they"look younger" look at least their age. This includes people who have had someone recently exclaim "Oh my goodness, we thought you were 10 years younger than that." |
| Most black women I know look MUCH younger than their age. |
This is me. I looked really young for years until, suddenly, I didn't at all! |
It's probably older people, or older than those they are complimenting, who are in denial about their own age too. They might be 55 thinking they look 45, so if you're actually 45, and look much better, then they will say you look 35, because you can't both be 45. |

She was 50 yo.

I'm an end-of-life nurse so I'm better than most about gauging someone's age, across the race/ethnicity spectrum. I see you naked, I see you without your bonus eyelashes, I see you without the Just For Men combover and Spanx.
That said, I met a couple in their 80s at the pool this weekend (so, barely clad) and I was floored. As in, could not believe. I would've guess 60-63. So it does happen. |

Statistically some people are going to look younger than their age, some older. What is the big deal? It says nothing about you personally, other than being lucky with genes. |

I’ve worked at a university since I was in my early 40s and been asked (usually by families touring/visiting) whether I’m a student. I’m 50 now, and a person I was on a zoom call with last week said they were shocked when they heard me describe my background/experience because they assumed I was in my early 20s.
Close up, my face certainly shows my age. I’m also very pale and don’t wear make up. But for whatever reason, people think I look young. |
I’m 50 and sometimes cannot tell HS, college, and recent college grads apart. And I have teens! |
It’s just humorous because you only hear from people who say they look younger |
I would love to hear more about your work and experiences, if you ever feel like sharing. How did you come to be an end of life nurse? |
That too, some people just can't tell. But then the people who receive the wrong guess seem to develop an identity around thinking they look soooo much younger than they are because people are just bad judges at this. |
| I did a dna test and it revealed by biological age is 33. I’m 36. I also am told I look younger |
