They had one before. It included 4 books. The William and Mary language arts units like Journeys and Destinations. The grammar books like Building Language. The vocabulary books like Wordly wise And the Root word books from Cesar's English. It was great. Why do they keep reinventing the wheel? |
You have no idea how little control teachers have over this. As someone who used to sneak in phonics back in the guided reading days- most of this isn’t learning how to teach, it is learning how to circumvent the archaic hierarchical system that is the school system. |
+1, Decades ago, teachers were doing their own thing with very little overlap between classrooms. Nowadays, it is significantly harder to get away with that. So you may not get that differentiation mentioned earlier. |
Upper elementary, where AAP is found, doesn’t teach phonics to the class. There will be morphology, and spelling, and a TON of writing. The program has extension for kids who need that. I can’t imagine how you would “test out” of a unit. The reading level of most of the materials are much higher than the average 5th grader but probably not as high as many kids could go. Some parents of AAP claim their kid is reading high enough to read Chaucer but it doesn’t mean they’d understand all of the complexities of the text. There is plenty to be learned in the curriculum, though I’m not really a fan of the topics of some units. |

Yes, it apparently is and level 2 is in grades K-6 and children are supposed to receive AAP lessons in gen ed. It happened to my kid in grades 1 and 2 before he went to full time AAP in third. So, yes I can see why the AAP office isn’t happy. |

Yes we will still have AAP lessons. Not sure how that will look with benchmark.
But benchmark is for 3-6 AAP just like general ed. It will be used according to the way FCPS is answering those questions. |
AAP, where the curriculum was different, starts in grade 3. This would be level 4 classes. Level 2 and 3 are in gen ed. Though there are some level 3 who get to go into a level 4 class, if there are not enough level 4 to make a class. Level 2 is virtually meaningless. |
The way level 2 and 3 are addressed in gen ed is usually by a monthly whole class lesson by the AART or something similar. They are not getting daily AAP services like the level 4 class. |
Oh- how is the AART differentiating between the gen ed and AAP students and giving each AAP student “curriculum lessons in their area of strength” Sounds more like they just come in and do a cut and paste worksheet with a few kids and then leave without addressing the extensions of curriculum in each child’s “area of strength” |
My kid got pulled out to do extra readings with someone and put on a few reader’s theater activities in their classroom in grades 1 and 2. It differentiated a little bit and they were able to just read instead of sitting through phonics lessons for things she did in preschool. Glad she is starting high school soon and get what she needed instead of “more writing” The answer for kid who is doing well in school and finishes early should never be more work. It breeds unhealthy life balance and anxiety. |

My teammate went to training. They want all teachers focused on using basal for quarter 1 and then slowly can introduce AAP stuff starting quarter 2 if time allows. I would say AAP Language Arts will look extremely different this year and parents/teachers don’t have much say in this change. The science of reading is law now in VA so this isn’t an FCPS thing but VA thing. |
