The thing that sucks about volleyball is that it really does end up being about how tall you are. You can be good, play club ball for years, and you will get replaced in an instant by a six-foot girl who has never played volleyball in her life. |
I agree it can be tough for a player who has worked really hard to lose out to someone based on something they can't control, but how is it different than basketball, football, or any number of other sports where certain physical attributes are a huge advantage? |
If they are clinically insane, they could try out for libero. |
There are a bunch of girls on the shorter side on my DD's JV team. There were a bunch of taller girls at the tryouts who didn't make the team because they didn't seem to have experience. In this case, the coach preferred experience rather than height. It's going to be tougher to make the varsity team for the shorter girls - most of the varsity players are tall and all of them play club. Plus, the roster is smaller for the varsity team compared to JV. Players already know that there will be cuts. |
How many of your players are doing plyometrics? I have a hard time convincing my DD that they are worth her time. She would not pass any chance of playing, but she is "too busy" for training that doesn't involve the ball itself. |
DD doesn’t do any formal form of plyometrics, but every time she walks into the kitchen, she does an approach and jumps to tap the overhang between the family room and the kitchen. I told her I want to see fingerprints as high up as possible. Does that count? |
