SWW is cutting its CHinese program. I think this is the school OP is referring to.

Thanks all! These responses have been so helpful.

The cuts at SWW are one thing we are concerned about, in addition to (wholly unsubstantiated and coming from my student) rumors that Deal/JR may be losing Mandarin teachers without replacements and/or reducing the program in the future to meet the DCPs budget cuts.

They begin mandarin in 7th. 4th-6th everyone takes Spanish. Begin in 7th, students choose from Spanish, Latin, mandarin and French.

FYI, just learned that the SWW cuts aren’t happening and they will keep the Chinese teacher (at least for next year).

But who wants to live with that chaos and uncertainty if your child really wants to study Mandarin through 12th grade?!?

True that SSSAS teaches Mandarin. The only problem is that they don’t teach English. Take your pick.

Georgetown Prep. (And practice what you learn with the large number of boarders from China)

Mandarin is Chinese. I don't know any school would offer Cantonese. What other language do you think would be categorized in Chinese but not Mandarin?

If you cannot find a school program, some other options to consider are 1) the Concordia summer immersion camp. Go for 2 weeks - 1 week not enough; 2) look for STARTalk programs. DD did a year long program through UConn - 2 semesters (online) and a 2 week summer immersion. Got 6 college credits. Free.
3) CTY offers very strong year long mandarin programs.

HOPE Chinese school offers weekend language classes.

I would be very surprised if a school with a class labeled Chinese was teaching a non-Mandarin dialect.

I always get this question when I told people I speak Chinese. They then would ask," Do you mean Mandarin"? I don't know if they know both Mandarin and Cantonness share exactly the same writing. I guess folks want to be inclusive. Or they are clueless?
