I know 4 kids from the DC chapter that got it…2 from MCPS and 2 from private schools in Montgomery county 😊. All middle class, high achievers. I wish they had more schools for the DC posse. |
SWW nominates kids for Posse and they routinely get it. They're not URM or low income kids. |
How do you know? Are these kids announced by the college? |
|
How does Posse work? Do you apply to the six schools and see which one takes you or does the Posse Foundation place you in one of them?
|
There is a whole page on it on the college website. |
| Does the nomination need to originate with the kid's school? |
| Posse kid from DC's school is extremely wealthy. Got a full ride to a state flagship. Had terrible grades in gen ed courses. Disciplinary issues. Bizarre program, truly. |
who nominated him? |
This was my kid's experience with DC Posse. His high school nominated 10 students. Other participating schools also nominated students. They assign you to a round 1 session. Round 1: DC was in a room with about 100 kids. They answered an essay online from Posse computers. Then they did group activities and were observed. Out of the 100, 30 were selected to Round. 2 Round 2: 20- minute individual interviews. As part of the interview, DC answered a form online, selecting his top 5 schools out of the 10 participating colleges from DC Posse and why he liked each of those schools. They were W&M, UVA, Lafayette.. and I can't remember the other 2. Posse will match you with a school on your list. You will commit to.apply to that school ED if you are selected as a finalist. Round 3: Finalists will have longer, panel interviews with the colleges they got matched with. One of the kids from his high school got selected for UVA. Full scholarship. Round 3 |

There was a very sobering podcast episode of This American Life about kids nominated for Posse, where the students profiled definitely met the understanding many here expressed as the original purpose of the program.
Worth a listen regardless of whether applying—it was heartbreaking. https://www.thisamericanlife.org/550/three-miles |
| How long will the process take? When will they release the results? Thanks |

My daughter is currently going through Dap 3 and her interview is in mid Dec. We are from NYC. I’m a bit nervous since they claim it’s a 50% chance but when I looked up stats she doesn’t belong to any . She a white girl from a middle income family who’s parents both attended college so not 1st gen ! It actually states 80% Latino and black and 10% white and 10% Asian and they will have a “ Jewish or ……
They claim to not choose based on this but it’s in print ! Any thoughts ? I feel anxious she’ll be devastated after going through this entire process to not be chosen ! She has spectacular grades , leadership in school and out but not sure if that’s going to make a difference ! |

If nothing else, posse finalist is great to put on application.
I think the timing is too problematic. Why not allow them to do an earlier ED or likely process, like an athlete? Otherwise it blocks out ED window. |
