I don't agree with the PP. Going by the selections in the last years it appears to be heavily based on the MAP scores of 7th grade Spring and 8th Grade fall.
Seems denigrating to a student who has consistently performed well throughout except for Spring of 7th grade. Also considering MCPS criteria does not specify only 7th grade spring and 8th grade fall, it is very unfair for the students who perform consistently well and drop unfortunately on one test: "MCPS magnet Criteria-based programs use multiple measures including an external assessment (MAP R and MAP M), report card grades (from 7th and 8th grade) and student application to determine student placement in a program" |
They’d have to “drop unfortunately” on two tests for it to be an issue, not one. |

So does that mean, they will consider best of the 2 (7th Spring or 8th Fall) ?
Even then why has not that clearly specified on the MCPS FAQs ? |
Yes, that’s exactly what it means. I don’t know why it’s not in the FAQ but it’s clear when you attend the open houses. |
Magnets look at the higher of the winter and spring scores. If your son studies hard this summer, I'm sure he can raise it. They won't take the 261 into consideration. However, even his winter score of 272 isn't enough for Blair (which I'm assuming is his goal), especially considering he's a boy. A score around 285-290ish is usually necessary to get admitted. I'd recommend Khan Academy. |
