No, but at last year move will not work. OP should go read the rules. Some public VA universities post them online. |

Not one of my three kids even considered in state they wanted to “go away” for school
|
VT, idiot |
| The one thing I’d caution OP on is UVA is insanely difficult to get in, even in-state. My kid is at UMD and we were talking to a friend from VA, who is in CS and scored 5s on CS A, Physics C etc. I asked why he chose UMD over UVA- I figured he had gotten in both places but said no he didn’t get into UVa. I felt bad afterwards for asking the question, but I always thought UVA would be easier coming from in state. |
|
PP again- talking to other VA friends afterwards, it seems like getting into UVA from NoVA is incredibly difficult.
If you are okay with VT as an IS option if UVA or WM don’t pan out, the move might be worth it. No shade to VT- my son who likes engineering is considering it. |

from FCPS (no idea of APS grading scales) in general you need >4.3 to get into UVA.
For Va Tech it is sometimes easier to get in from out of state. I don't know about the other schools. https://udc.vt.edu/irdata/data/students/admission/index for 2023 it was a 63% admit rate for out of state and a 47% for in state. |
VT is more difficult to get into for some majors (like engineering) than UVA. I feel like every year I see really outstanding students rejected from VT, and then others get in to VT that are not nearly as good. |
Yes, but that's 3rd rate by comparison. VT CS is around 40th in the US, whereas MD is top 20. |
That's not true. Average GPA and SATs for UVA engineering are much higher than VT. |
| Assuming all the same stats, is it still easier for a child at a nova top public to get into UVA than a child from Jackson-Reed? |
The average is for all students. PP was talking about STEM majors specifically. |
where does it show that? I didn't think most schools segmented scores by majors. |
Yes, Engeineering at UVA has much higher stats than the college. It is much much harder to get into than VT for engieering. |
UVA Engineering SATs were always about 100 points above the school average. Engineering admission @UVA is much harder. |
That makes sense. My nephew got into VT Engineering but was rejected from UVA Engineering with a 4.4 GPA and 1500+ SATs. |
