Advice on Schools - moving from Ireland

Montgomery County public schools are generally good. Several Red Line metro stations are in Montgomery County just north of DC. Look at those neighborhoods also.

I believe 5th grade is still part of the full immersion program so entry at that point may not be possible or at least inadvisable. Some kids join in 6th grade but I believe they need pretty intensive language training (at school) to get to the level required in middle school. Best to ask to speak to other families who have done that to find out about their experiences.

But it is accurate that "the best" DCPS middle/high school are middling at best. You are definitely better off in private or some of the burbs, if you are indeed concerned about education.

Exactly.

The racists in this thread are the ones advocating OP send her child to private school.

Different strokes for different folks.

Hence the daily postings by DC parents contemplating moving to close-in suburbs for the schools?

This is accurate. DC parents are constantly trying to figure out when and how to move to the suburbs when they don’t win the high school lotteries.

Look at Norwood school. Private, your kids would be in their middle school and then would have to move schools for ninth grade. It is always worth asking if they have any “late” openings for admissions for next year.

Norwood isn’t close to the metro and having one kid in Norwood and one at another school can make for a complicated commute, especially if one parent had to handle getting kids to school.

But the lotteries ensure equitable distribution of scarce resources.

You can’t possibly be complaining about that.

You are correct that I'm not complaining about that.

MoCo schools are fine.

The system even used to be one of the best. Just know ahead of time the bathrooms are unsafe, if open at all (they’ll are frequently locked during the school day, for safety reasons). But the education is fine in most schools.

Hi op,

The DCPS is so dysfunctional and dangerous that President Obama refused to send his children to any school in the District (and he was offered his choice; no questions asked). The DC mayor at the time begged Obama. Obama still sent his kids to private.

Now you know what kind of horrific school system the democrats/ DC run here. Proceed accordingly.

Not that I disagree with DC schools being dysfunctional, but this is a dumb point. You know very well that Obama's kids were going to need security details.

President Carter sent his daughter to a DCPS school. With a security detail.

Security detail is no excuse.

Oh, was DC a Republican stronghold during the Carter administration?

This is idiotic. Secret service preferred a select group of privates with actual campuses.

Anonymous wrote:Based on your wish list, you'll want to look to private first. Middle school here splits off in either 6th or 7th (on the Virginia side so not sure which it is in MD/DC - in VA it depends on your address) and you will never find a 5th grader on the same campus as a 7th grader in this area. Same with class sizes - small class sizes by law don't have to exist in public schools so they are never guaranteed.

You can find good inclusive community in both public and private. A balance between academics and sports will be almost entirely family and kid-driven as opposed to the school at public. Privates vary in their focus a lot but it is easily possible to find the one you describe.

Nonsense. Feel free to ignore this poster.

The DC public schools are fine. No reason to waste all that $$ on snobby privates.

Bull shit. Do not crucify someone else’s kids with your political agenda. DC public schools are on a good day highly uneven and in a bad day physically dangerous. There are many reasons that DC public schools rank so very poorly. I would be wildly more likely to send my kids to public in Mississippi than DC.

There are a wide range of privates. Some might have many wealthy parents. Others are not so wealthy. Catholic schools are worth looking into if one is Catholic or can tolerate the religious aspect of those schools.

Another option, honestly, is to live in Montgomery County in MD, immediately north of DC. Those are solid public schools, very unlike in DC.

Ok, MAGA / supremacist.
