Social media - love it or hate it

Anonymous
I hate it totally but I am 50 so more than 1/2 my life was spent without it. I'm not sure that my kids who never were without could. I loved the pre social media days SO much better. To me there's no benefit at all when you consider the side effects.

That describes addiction.

Social media is the “soma” for an increasingly moronic segment of the population.

Completely abolish it!

I enjoy it for myself because I can curate it to just show me pets, painters, farmers and recipes. Most kids don't do this and get shown blatant propaganda, get brainwashed, get insecure...I would abolish it entirely tomorrow if possible.

I like it but I filter out what I don't want to see.

Too much envy/sharing to inspire envy. Base and ignoble. I avoid.

It’s fine in moderation. I like looking at Facebook memories, and I like seeing other people’s photos and posts. I’m part of some birding groups and have learned a lot. I’ll watch like 10 minutes of Instagram reels for entertainment.

Exactly.

Facebook should be renamed “Envy-Book.”

On the surface, sure - it seems innocent enough. You just “sharing.” And just with “friends.”

If they are friends, then that means they will “only be happy for you,” right? And, isn’t envy a sin or at least wrong??

But we all know human nature.

- When your sibling posts a bigger house than you? How do you really feel?

- when your cousin announces she pregnant with their third child, but you are struggling with infertility, how do you REALLY feel?

- when all your friends post their perfect family holiday photos, but you just got divorced, how do you expect any normal person to feel?

Facebook only shows you the best of others’ worlds. That cannot compete with real life.

The end result is depression.

Social media is toxic.

Social media for hobbies and interests only. For social reasons? It makes me spiral if I spend even five minutes on it.

Same poster here. LOL, except DCUM.

Social media is thoroughly toxic and ultimately destructive.

OTOH, it's good in some ways for adults to keep in touch with each other, talk about common interests, and find interesting people you would not otherwise ever know.

agree. I am in a lot of groups on FB for particular interests and that is really nice.
