Talk to me about Alexandria City

Moved close to Old Town more than 23 years ago - have loved every phase of raising a family here from preschool to HS to empty nest. You can't beat the location plus people are fun and friendly and from all over the USA.

Are not wealthy and send their kids to public school

Alexandria has parts that are very charming and I get the appeal.

Plenty of 'wealthy' people send their kids to public. We do with a HHI of 1.3. About 80% of Rosemont and Del Ray send their kids to public and if being able to afford a 1.5 million dollar home AND multiple kids isn't wealthy I don't know what is.

Well those on the school board who actually have kids don't and neither does the superintendent.

I have major issues with ACPS school board but the current chair’s kids are in public ACPS schools.

My take as someone who grew up in Bethesda / Chevy Chase and now lives in Alexandria but in the Fairfax County part of Alexandria — live in the Fairfax county part of Alexandria lol. I personally think Alexandria area is the best place to live factoring in cost, charm, architecture, and just overall vibe, but I wouldn’t want to live in the city of Alexandria because the politicians are clowns and they are essentially 100% focused on pandering to poor people and immigrants. As a result of this pandering, the schools are now trash, the roads have potholes, there is crime and “affordable housing”, and neighborhoods that aren’t even near the water flood. Just not worth contributing tax money to that sinking ship. I live in Belle Haven so I get all the benefits of Alexandria without being involved in it personally.

There’s a reason why the current mayor isn’t running again. He knows that he and his radical policies are failures and have destroyed the city. Rat from a sinking ship.

Old Town: thanks for subsiding all the poors in west end. We appreciate your sacrifices.

My biggest irritation about Alexandria are the bike lanes on King St and Seminary Rd I also drive on those on King St and used to drive on those on Seminary Rd. until they put up the barriers and pillons.

Yes, any day now housing value will go down by 50%. It’ll be like waterworld down on Mt Vernon. Better get to junction Bakery now while you can, or bagel uprising.

I can't wait to leave the city of Alexandria. It's been a hectic nightmare here. First the road diets what used to make me 5 min to get to the store now takes me 25-30 min. NO ONE ever uses these bike lanes. The density is out of control like 13,000 people a square mile. The panhandlers everywhere (the city just recently took the crime OFF the books.) There is trash every where on curbs, overflowing city cans, there are about 4-5 bags of trash around all the city trash cans by seminary right now no ones picked up in over a week. The crime is crazy their have been two shootings in my complex alone one ended in murder. There was over 70 cars broken into one night alone here in the west end. There is no less than 7 low income project housing buildings they have stashed away in the west end in less than 1/4 mile area. Free busses for everyone including those who don't even live here plus we are paying for public school busses AND the "free" city busses that the kids now use for school. This and we get to drive by the tent people in Linconia by duke st. And I agree with the PP about the insane utilities. $120 a month for ONE bathroom for just the water and sewer bill! I don't have 5 toilets! I have one! The comcast monopoly, $220 a month for cable and internet (basic cable). It's a NOPE all the way around.

You’re all hot and bothered about maybe 2 people literally on the interstate?

You made it sound like “ENCAMPMENTS” like in DC off of E Street or the Whitehurst Freeway with dozens of people all over town. You are delusional. Seek help.

This is all user error. Sounds like you should rent somewhere other than City of Alexandria.
