+1. I hope they charge her for the cancellation. This is ridiculous beyond belief.

The thing is: Anxiety isn't logical.

So what? She took someone else’s spot. There should be consequences for this level of selfishness

Uh...oh my.

DP, but I’m literally on a wait list to even make an appointment for one right now. Most doctors have a backlog of patients waiting to get one because of delays from Covid and the lowering of the recommended age to get one. So yea, it’s pretty bad to take a spot and not go. And because of the prep there’s no way for the doctors to fill that spot when it’s canceled the day of.

+1. I'm a little surprised by all the people encouraging you to say something, give stats and reassurance. It's her decision to make.

100% this. She’s presumably a grown a$$ adult. You can’t force her to do anything. I wouldn’t waste my time trying to convince her. She clearly doesn’t want to do it and at this point your presentation of statistics isn’t going to do anything other than waste everyone’s time.

++1 I'm not saying that colonoscopies are not useful but this doesn't rise to the level of concern I would have for a parent not vaccinating their kids for example. If she gets colon cancer or something else that isn't detected promptly, she'll be sorry she skipped the procedure--but statistically most people don't get colon cancer.

I wouldn't say anything or follow up with her on this. She has some work to do on herself and this isn't anything a friend can manage for her.

But, if she asks for a colonoscopy ride again, go ahead and provide it.

I was the same. Just went through this. Terrified of it. I rescheduled, waited a few months and finally resolved myself to do it. I think it's probably fine not to do it at 45. Maybe she can do cologuard instead? Maybe tell her that treatment is much much easier should they find anything earlier. Everyone I know who had stage 3 or 4 was having significant symptoms.

I don't know if she'd be open to this, but she could talk to her doctor about getting Xanax or something similar. I only ever use it for health anxiety (like maybe once a year) but it's so helpful to me when I do need it.

+1

SSRI's aren't the only effective drugs to treat anxiety. Doctors just prefer them because other options are more prone to abuse.

She will almost certainly get fired from the practice as a patient.

They reached out, were really kind, and rescheduled her.

Except she needs a plan to make sure this doesn’t happen again the next time.

She has a 1 in 1,300 chance of perforation of the colon. Happened to my grandpa. Maybe that will reassure her. /s

OP, it sounds like something I might do. But I have a good gastro who has talked me into it. Plus I would have to pay the 150 fee. I am 63 with 2 kids in college. I need to do it.

You, all, I feel like I should give a CAUTIONARY TALE here. My mom, who I loved, was also anxiety prone, and kept scheduling then cancelling her colonoscopies out of fear of what they would find. She literally for several years refused to go -- even where CT scans showed she might have a growth. Just flat-out was scared of the procedure. She literally passed away of colon cancer at a young age, barely got to meet her grandchildren, and it was all so, so so preventable.

PLEASE GO GET CHECKED!!! BE THERE FOR YOUR CHILDREN, AND YOUR GRAND-CHILDREN. THIS IS OFTEN A PREVENTABLE DISEASE!!!!! I miss my mom and wish I could have talked her into it, but she refused until it was too late. It is an easy procedure. And your family will thank you for it. Do it for them, if not for yourself. Be there for your loved ones. You want to see them grow up, don't you?

Yeah you are way past due. Please get it. It’s not a big deal if you a get through the prep. Want to get polyps before they turn into cancer. .
