peer assessment

Where can you find this

I went to hyp and I’ve never been sure why “being an ag college” is a ding

Ag is fundemental to our lives - i would love to have the skills to be a rancher or farmer

Imagine holding a bunch of tristate focused schools like Penn, Columbia or Michigan in higher stead than ag schools

The way I see it, hypsm + “ag schools” are the real value adds in the university space

It is the OP. The Wisconsin booster constantly wants to remind everyone how great Wisconsin was last century.

Public universities really were that great. The decline of public universities is the real story here.

Still see Berkeley and Michigan highly ranked. UCLA has now joined the group.

Currently there are no publics in top 10. The top 3 publics: UCLA and Berkeley are tied at #15 and Michigan is at #21.

That’s true. However if you look at PA scores, Berkeley is still top ten and Michigan is top 15. The original rankings at USNWR were based off PA scores. So these two universities haven’t really declined, the metrics of rankings just changed.

It's important to note that PA are specifically a response to undergraduate peer reputation score. While there is correlation, we have no idea what other institutions consider to be the premier institutions overall. One strong option is to look at PHD placement rates. Another way to rank universities is going off of Brian Leiter's reports, who has a strong connection to most academics in the country (and a Michigan alumnus for the Michigan boosters out there). Both put Wisconsin and Michigan at the same level.

Now the 1910 rankings...those were legit.

bwahahahaha

All that AM radio money...
<wipes tears away>

thank you!!

You do realize that the vast majority of these folks don't go to college...or if they are the progeny of some large Texas rancher, they aren't studying "ranching" at college.

The kids that go to college that major in agriculture go work for Monsanto or John Deere or Cargill...probably companies you think are destroying agriculture. They don't graduate and become organic farmers working a 10 acre plot.

Of course every other international ranking has Michigan significantly rated higher than Wisconsin. Of course you never quote those.

If the link does not work, the rundown is
Top 10 (1925)
1. Chicago
2. Harvard
3. Columbia
4. Yale
5. Wisconsin
6. Princeton
7. Johns Hopkins
8. Michigan
9. Berkeley
10. Cornell

Premier agricultural school, when the industry was still a big employer??

Don't know why Michigan Booster always tries to make the claim that Wisconsin was an agriculture school. Yes, they've always had an agricultural department, because they are in fact in Wisconsin. But, they were founded as the "University of Wisconsin", not the "state agricultural college". From 1848 to 1866, no agriculture classes were offered, and Wisconsin already gained prominence in their math and greek departments. In fact, in 1852, the Univ of Michigan attempted to hire away Wisconsin's chancellor John Hiram Lathrop, but he refused.

I’m the Michigan booster you are referring to. I never made any claim about Wisconsin being an agricultural school. That was another poster. I do know that there is one Wisconsin booster here, namely you. That you would mention something that happened in 1852 is why I laugh at your boosterism. This is 2024 last time I checked the calendar. Wisconsin has been passed by a few other publics since 1925. You should stop living in the past nd concentrate on the present. Currently, Wisconsin is not ranked as a top public.

Wisconsin went from #5 to #35. 12 other public schools have since passed it up. I had no idea that Wisconsin dropped that much. Thanks to the OP for bring this to my attention. Shows how Wisconsin hasn’t kept pace with other top publics.

Some of the publics ranked higher aren’t considered better than Wisconsin in actuality. UCI? UCSD? Florida? Meanwhile, Texas and UNC are largely considered equal. Furthermore, by PA, Wisconsin is still firmly in the top 10 for publics.

In actuality, perhaps they are. Texas and UNC are both ranked higher than Wisconsin. UCSB and Illinois are your equals. It’s ok. Wisconsin is still better than most other state flagships, just not 12 others.

UVA is next. They are dropping more and more every year.

USNWR rankings are not to be taken so seriously. Regardless,

From 1925 to now

Berkeley #9 to #15
Michigan #8 to #21.
Wisconsin #5 to #35

Are people really arguing over which excellent university is more excellent than the other? Every college and university named on this thread is excellent.

You new here? That's what these lunatics do. Argue about who's 9 vs. 10, try to bait people into defending a certain school so they can put it down (UVA highlighted in this thread). It's compulsive psychotic behavior that they would never engage in in real life, but snarky, passive-aggressive, and rude behavior by supposed adults is standard here.

There are other people who obsess about NFL drafts, beer ratings, and celebrity romances.
