We paid $6,000 for our entire house. It's about 3,000sf and included all hallways, dining room, living room, family room, kitchen, laundry room, basement, powder room, 4 bedrooms and 2 full baths. |
PP here. If you were so inclined, you could hire day laborers without the middle man and cut your price into a fraction! |
You do get what you pay for. We have a house about the size of yours, but only painted half of it for about $7K (including wallpaper removal). They did an awesome job, paint looks great, very detail oriented and long lasting. I later got the other half painted for around $1,500 with much cheaper painters (no wallpaper removal). The difference totally shows. We also painted one room ourselves = complete mess. 12K sounds high, but if you want quality, you also may not want to paint yourself or go with the lowest bidder just based on price.

That is completely not true. If you use Angies List and check refrences and never pay in full until the job is complete than there definitly are deals to be had. There ARE contractors out there that ALWAYS give high bids and see what sticks. They do not have the conversion rate some of the less expensive guys have, but they make their money on less jobs for more money. There are TONS of subcontractos out there who sub to GCs that do not charge the GCs 12K for the entire house and do a great job. I've often tapped into the subs who charge a little more to me as a homeowner direct, but no where near the type of premium the homeowner is describing. |
Exactly. This is paint, people. Paint. Not plumbing, not complex electrical work. Choose good quality paint and a painter who will take the time to cover your floors and do the prep work. That's all you need, and neither of these things has to be expensive. |
To all Previous Posters who had good, affordable experiences, can you share names of companies you used? |
Sure they dont have to be expensive but those people doing the quality work need to get paid too. So if they're not contracting their work out to min. wage workers, they will generally give you quality for a slightly higher price. You really get what yo pay for. |
You really think they spread the wealth? Funny. It works this way...there is a guy at the top who speaks English well, prepares a good contract, and provides a professional looking quote. He then hires Hispanic labor for $10/hr, mostly illegal, and pockets a huge profit and drops in to check on the job every once in awhile. You get deals going with smaller set ups, where you are basically paying someone DIRECT. They might not have the best marketing, trucks, or nice kaki pants, but they work hard and get the job done for a fair price. You can find them all over Angies List and the reviews to back it up. Price Gouging does not equal quality. It just means a sucker is born every day. |
Quality at a higher price is not necessarily true, PP! I was the PP that mentioned Certa Pro. RIP OFF, RIP OFF, RIP OFF. They use day laborers and pocket the difference and nickel and dime the contract to death. We have used many contractors throughout the years and were astonished at how underhanded they were. This was not us being naive, necessarily.
Definitely look at Angies list and Washington Checkbook. 8:58 - whom did you use for that price, if yo don't mind me asking? That was a bargain! Also, be sure to omit ceilings and closets (unless you really need them painted). |
