Homework vs No Homework

Do teachers even do this anymore? My middle schoolers have never had to do this. The assigned book is always read in class, and my read, I mean it is played on audio and the kids sit there and listen. They don’t even read it aloud in class themselves! So disappointing

Yes! Give homework. I’d think equivalent of 2 hrs per week with Mon, Weds, Fri due dates is appropriate.

Homework with flexible deadlines is best imo. Give it all out on Friday and make it due the following Friday. My kids have been in both private and public. The extra practice and parent involvement in what they are working on is nice. But having to do it every night is not. Some days we really didnt have an extra 20 minutes to sit down and work on it and it became a burden and annoyance. But if we could have worked on it over the weekend or weeknights when we were home more I wouldn't have minded.

By 4th grade, I expect to see some homework in all subjects, but possibly not every subject every night. I would not expect total homework to be more than 30-40 minutes each night.

At 1st grade, I am ok with 10-15 minutes of total homework, but do not have an expectation either way.

Homework should NOT be graded as that would be terribly unfair. Whoever said that earlier is an idiot.

PP, you should be paying attention in school not on DCUM.

As long as kids have independent practice in school, I don’t see the need for nightly homework in elementary school. As they get to the upper grades, reviewing for tests is a good practice.

I do believe elementary kids should be reading for pleasure daily, and I would much rather have my child doing that than reports, worksheets, etc.

I think I am also biased because my kid gets off the bus close to 5:00. There’s just not a lot of time for homework (let alone playing, vegging out).

I would check in with the math teacher and anyone else who might assign homework and see if you can coordinate with them to make sure kids aren't getting more than 30 minutes or so a night, or no more than 1.5 hours a week.

By the way, I think weekly assignments are much better for kids than nightly. It is less stress overall and is helpful for kids who have activities or other commitments some nights and not others. It also encourages building up time management skills as if they leave it all for Sunday night, it will be a pain to finish, so it encourages them to set aside time (with parents help) to work on it throughout the week.

+1 As a parent I think 4th graders should start getting homework. I know in our school district middle school is quite the shock to some kids since little homework is given in elementary (if any). I really think kids (starting in later elem grades) should start to slowly learn study, time management, etc. habits to get them ready for middle. Also, as a parent it really helps to get a better sense of what your child is working on and what they are exceling or struggling with. Our school district also doesn't give grades to middle school making it even harder for parents to get a sense of what is going on.

You teach 4th grade reading only? I don’t understand how you don’t also teach writing and other LA topics…?

Hi mom

I'd like to see fewer daily assignments and more longer-term assignments. An actual book report, for example.
