Where can my nephew find a place to live that won't care if he smokes?

Call me crazy, but I'm going to guess if he is mentally impaired and smokes it is going to scare a lot of landlords off from a safety perspective. I'm assuming his mental impairment is obvious -- how can they be sure he is safe and wouldn't fall asleep smoking or smoking in bed? Admittedly anyone can do this, but if someone is impaired it is reasonable to assume they might not make good judgement calls.

Are you speaking for yourself because you sound as though you are mentally impaired as well as socially impaired. Remember that "assume" makes an ass out of you and me. In this case it makes you a monumental asshole. How dare you speak of this 19 year old with such disdain? I'm not his aunt but I wish her the best of luck in finding him a place to live. Don't make fun of people (and you are making fun of him) because it may happen that one of your children becomes either physically or mentally impaired, probably the latter considering you are his mother.

I wasn't making fun of him -- I'm pointing out a legitimate safety concern. Neither of us have any idea of what kind of an impairment he has or how severe it is. All I was saying is that some landlords could perceive the situation as one with concern for safety. Just the same way a landlord would be concerned if they rented to an alcoholic who smokes.

Ironically, its often those who preach tolerance who are the most judgmental to smokers. Yet, most usually don't seem to have any problems with alcohol, which is a recreational drug that alters consciousness, unlike smoking, and ruins more lives and kills more innocent bystanders than smoking does.

I would love to see the judgment and vitriol aimed at smokers also aimed at drinkers and see what the public reaction is then.
AMEN!!!

Such a dumb comparison. There's no such thing as secondhand drinking, and a tenant who drinks doesn't make an apartment stink the way a tenant who smokes does.

I used to smoke. Do it if you want to, but don't get all up in arms when people are understandably grossed out by it.

Do landlords now ask about smoking? I could see renting someone's condo but even in apartment buildings?

I live with 4 people on cap hill and we only allow smokin outside, and our 1 roomie who smokes totally understands this.
We don't wantthe whole house to smell like smoke, though most of us smoked before. It's just gross. We cook, eat and live there, we don't want it to stink.

I'm sure he'll have a hard time finding a place where he can smoke inside, even if he finds a place with smokers since it seem that mist smokers also smoke outside.

What's the problem with him smoking outside? Instead of trying to find place where he can smoke inside, why not make it easier and smoke outside?
