Rigor with 3.3 UW/ 4.0 WGPA

Oregon State can still be an option. But as you already have Pitt in hand - stop worrying!

What's wrong with Pitt?

He’s thrilled about Pitt! Thank you.

Looking at more options because he’s not STEM- Pitt is a “medicine town” (strong in nursing, physical therapy, pre-med etc) so the focus of the majority of programs/ internships etc are for them.

At the end of the day, he said he’s really happy he challenged himself with IB as that will prepare him for college and life in general vs getting all As in fluff on-level high school classes. Plus no one takes rigorous courses thinking they’ll flop.
He refuses to let 1 D define him. I agree it builds character and is a huge life lesson.

It will be fine. Thanks for those of you who are sending positive vibes and good ideas. Good luck to all the seniors, it ain’t easy.

Man you and your son sound grounded and…normal. He’s going to do great! He understands what the important things are. Good luck to you both!

Your kid only needs one good acceptance, OP. Congrats!

Oh, yeah—IB will definitely prepare him for wherever he ends up! Honestly, I think IB prepares kids for actual college coursework better than AP classes do.

AP classes are very much cram it in, spit it out. But IB develops the mental muscles he’ll need to find a topics for and write a term paper, and to demonstrate flexibility in adhering to different requirements for the various subjects. And kids learn how to pull together and apply everything they learn in the full range of their classes, across the academic spectrum.

+1 on Pitt. Any reason why he didn't take the SAT/ACT? A good score on that would have elevated his profile a lot.

People have great things to stay about Wooster and it’s listed as a college that changes lives.

I agree this would be a good match based on what OP says. He also might be a good fit for Beloit. Both do well with kids who are curious but not necessarily star performers in high school. Looks like both are still taking apps, at least on a case-by-case.

Counselors at big high schools aren’t helpful but agree the list was not balanced - the inflated expectations were his, we’ve been trying to tell him to add more safeties since the summer and the reality is just now sinking in for him. Rejected from in-state UMD College Park, WL at Wisconsin Madison, IN at Pitt, thanks for the link on other schools still accepting applications.

This is not meant to be rude, OP. Curious of others know if Wisconsin WL everyone or if they reject EA? Surprised OP’s son was WL. Isn’t it a pretty hard admit?

My daughter has higher stats than OP’s kid and was outright rejected EA.

Sorry for your DD, PP. It is surprising a kid with a D is WL at Wisconsin. My DC was rejected from Wisconsin last year with a 33 ACT and a 3.4 from a big3 private.

3.3 UW is a VERY low GPA for a college bound kid in MCPS. OP didn't state what HS, but look at school profiles for BCC and Einstein (2 IB schools). GPA (weighted and unweighted) puts them solidly in the bottom half of the class.

Thanks but honestly she only applied because my husband convinced her to - he loves Madison! She wasn’t emotionally invested in the school at all, thankfully.

I am surprised that the OP’s son was waitlisted with his stats. Just goes to show you never know what a school wants in a student. It’s just one big crapshoot.

Where did your DC end up?

OP, if your kid isn’t STEM, wants east coast, and wants urban, what about Emerson? Still taking apps.
