WIS |
| There are a bunch of Hill families at WIS. We make the drive across town to Maret. A friend of ours has a child at Beauvoir. If you walk around in the spring you’ll see grad signs from GDS, NCS and STA. We also know kids at Burgundy Farms. I also wish we didn’t have a commute but we love the Hill. If schools are that important to you and you don’t line the options here, then make the drive. We do it and think it’s worth it. |
Friends is a progressive school. |

My complaint is that Cap Hill has no high school options. Walls and all the privates are a good 30-45 minutes away - maybe more in traffic. (I supposed boys have Gonzaga but I have girls). That is what might push us to leave Cap Hill when the time comes. For now we're making due with DCPS and CHDS.
But to address some of OP's complaints - good luck finding a traditional non-religious private. That's just not a thing in this area. Just super progressive and slightly less progressive. |
| Am I wrong in thinking a 45 min commute isn't that bad, for the right school? We're at SSSAS with ~20 min commute, but plenty of my kids' classmates seem to have 40 min commutes and longer. Sure it's not ideal, but it's a trade off that seems common with choosing an independent school. A lot of them make a dent in homework on the commute. |
We are by Eastern Market and drive 35 mins for elementary. Have been doing the commute for 2 years and plan to do it through HS but I see us breaking around middle and renting in NW but keeping our house on the Hill). We really don’t want to live in upper NW, couldn’t find a good DCPS path that we liked, and fell in love with a certain private. There are kids who commute just as far from Virginia or MD for this private too. |
Nonsense. Just because they’re at the school doesn’t mean they’re thrilled about it. It’s an “okay for DC” school where they can bode their time until jetting off for bluer skies. I completely respect that rationale, but you’re kidding yourself to think everyone’s there because they can’t think of a reason to leave! |
Wondering how your experience at Gonzaga compares to your experience with Walls. |

If you want a centralized authority that distributes conventional, non-religious, co-ed schools throughout the city based on population, it is called DCPS. You have chosen not to partake of their offerings.
Private schools are run by boards of directors, who come together to form a school by hiring large staffs. Having a group of people do that near your home isn't an entitlement. |
How do you like SSSAS? I think we're going to send DC there for K in the Fall. |

Capitol Hill Christian Academy is in the process of starting up. K-1st next year, possibly other grades if they get enough takers. It's an ACCS school, so pedagogy follows the Classical Christian model - i.e. very traditional.
https://www.capitolhillchristianacademy.org/ (I know nothing other than a brief glimpse at their website. My kids are at another ACCS school.) |
(This does not, of course, help out on the "want a secular experience" angle but might if you are looking for something that just isn't Catholic.) |
No way is SSSAS 20 mins from the Hill. |
It is. 395 to Quaker Lane. |
Yes, about 20 minutes from Eastern Market. |
