Calling all SAHMs who have gone back to work without having any hard skills....what did you do?

Anonymous
Never mind the Hyp or three. What is 'eons'?
Anonymous
Not me, but someone I knew. Very similar profile to OP. Took a generic desk job at a small company, learned the product and went into sales. Very well spoken, put together, and could travel at a moment's notice because her kids were grown.

This.

I was a SAHM and I went back to work because we DID need the money. It sucks. There’s nothing great about dealing with yelling bosses, stressful deadlines, and irrational workloads. Life is short so enjoy your life and don’t subject yourself to working if you don’t have to.

I mean, yes, the OP is clearly a troll.

But also, if there are some parents (or caregivers of any sort) who took time away from working but want to get back in the game, go for it. I took many years away from full
Time work and transitioned my volunteer work into a career in non profit development. I meet interesting people, support a mission, and on-ramp wasn't that steep (hard skills wise)

I keep pointing out the troll posts on here but no one seems to believe. I bet nearly half are made up to keep things going on here. Scamming people, seemingly.

Surely there can’t be two separate adult people in the same thread who don’t know what HYP indicates?

You obviously don’t know what it means. The pp never asked what it means. They said ivy leagues. They obviously know what it means. They asked who would attend all 3? Idiot.

This is so unintentionally hilarious

No one goes to Harvard, Yale, and Princeton? Do you know anyone who has attended all? No, you don’t.

OP was clearly saying she went to *one* of them, without wanting to specify which one. My god.

Np. Clearly? That wasn’t not clear at all. My god. She said hyp. That is not one.

OP’s meaning was completely obvious to anyone who has spent two minutes on the college forum. You’re getting worked up about nothing.

Not the person you are commenting to but I disagree. It was not obvious and no one would list a trio of colleges implying that they attended.

Why do you think OP is a troll? I really don’t get it. OP’s experience / situation actually so closely mirrors mine that I did a double take and questioned whether I wrote it! Regardless of what yall think, this thread has been helpful for me.
OP— I cannot for the life of me figure out why I chose to study policy either!! I should have been so much more thoughtful in realizing my strengths and weaknesses.

Volunteered, then went back to school to study law. I was much older than my classmates and am now far older than the other associates but am happy overall with the decision.

Not OP but I’m curious about this. Can you give your approximate age when you went to law school? Did you have young kids and how did you balance that? Most lawyers I know are pretty unhappy so it’s great that you’re happy— are you with a firm or govt?

I did a lot of substituting and I feel good about my decision, but teaching sucks right now so I wouldn't be surprised if I don't last long. When I want another job, at least I won't have the resume gap to contend with. Also, I am doing math so between that and having a teaching license, I'll be valuable as a tutor.

I know some teachers who gained some tech skills while teaching and taught instructional design and are now doing UX design and things like that.

Oh, another thing I've seen people do that is much less intense than teaching is being an instructional assistant. I considered that for a while because all the ones I interacted with love their jobs. They found it really rewarding and the ones who had to quit because it didn't pay enough were bummed about it. In Virginia it's not difficult to become one (I think you just need a college degree and to take a test and for you the test will be easy).

Instructional assistant is a good suggestion. VA doesn't require a college degree. For example, Fairfax County requires:

Associate degree; OR

Two years of college (48 credit hours); OR

Meet a rigorous standard of quality demonstrated through a state or local academic assessment knowledge of, and the ability to assist with, reading, writing, and mathematics instruction.

No she did not till after the question was asked. It clearly says she received her degree from hyp. She did not say she went to one of them. And you are also incorrect again, bc she later said she went to two of them. This is when she said she did not want to be specific. She did not specify this before the question was asked in her first post. Learn to read.

I am not OP and I didn't go to any Ivy League university, but even I know that HYP is a signal that it is one of the triumvirate of Ivy's.

OP here. Did not mean to be so controversial with the HYP statement! I find the commentary to be quite amusing . In any case, not a troll but kind of wish I were just trolling. A bit discouraged by my job prospects and can’t help but to be envious of my friends who have seemingly amazing careers. Again, grateful for all the helpful comments. And to those on this thread who are in similar situations, thx for chiming in. It’s nice to be reminded that I’m not alone!

NP. It was clear to me that she was giving us an idea of the school(s) she attended without being specific. You are a literal, rigid thinker if you thought she was claiming to have attended all 3 of those specific schools.
