Except it's misleading. A man was shot and killed on the Ped Mall in 2017; since then, there have been a few instances where someone fired shots (and was later arrested) but no one was killed. You'd think it's the South Side of Chicago with regular attacks from these posts.

Iowa's a really nice community, and a relatively low-key environment generally, so it seemed like the usual DCUM phenomenon where some hater emerges to dump incessantly on a school (whether it's Michigan, Wisconsin, Chicago, Notre Dame, WUSL, UMCP, UVA, Duke, Columbia, Penn, Penn State, etc.) was less likely. But guess not.

There was a shooting last week! Outside the boba tea cafe. Cops everywhere. Arrested a person “on the run” from Chicago at the cheap motel across town (242 exit) hours later. Where is the news? Exactly.

And yet people on this site would sell their soul to the devil to get their kids into U of Chicago. Go figure.

Google the murals. They have huge murals on campus painted onto the the sides of 6-story parking garages; the murals are that tall. They are Black people’s disembodied faces, with sayings like “Use your privilege to save Black bodies” and “Black joy needs no permission.” The students laugh at the murals. People throw eggs at the murals.

It’s a horrible dynamic, regardless of whatever race your kid is. Jim Crow is alive and well in Iowa City.

Couldn’t find anything about them being defaced but it’s no surprise that works of public art provoke different reactions.

You seem to be simultaneously attacking the murals and any negative reactions they’ve provoked. Pick a lane - maybe that will help you get the help you need.

The murals are problematic because they’re enormous and placed at awkward intersections. The reaction to them is problematic because it’s disrespectful and scary.

Agreed but the mocking sounds like it gets scary, like it escalates tensions and doesn’t feel safe. Shooting and all, yikes

That's like saying the White House is near BWI. It's 36 miles between the two. It's 37 miles between the University of Kansas and Leavenworth prison. The prison has zero impact on the lives of the college students.
