DP. Yeah, by those measures you could say that just applying means generally not being considered, since so few are accepted overall. |
My kid had in person for Dartmouth, Harvard, Georgetown and zoom for Penn and Princeton. |
Georgetown requires the interview, and we alumni interviewers can do 3-4 in areas w/o many alumni. Tons here in DC and I do 1-2 for ED and usually another for RD, and maybe a transfer. Not doing your interview is a definite black mark: we are asked to report our outreach if we don’t hear within 1-2 weeks of assignment (I will email, then text, then call, and finally send one last email). |
| DC had a last minute zoom interview at Yale with a senior and was accepted. |
Mine had one for NU - DC is applying to the School of Communications for Theatre Arts (with a double in neuroscience in the College of Arts and Sciences) and was paired with an theatre-poli sci alum who went on to law school. Valuable as she was part of the selective National HS Institute for theatre arts last summer for rising HS seniors and there is no way to indicate that (he was well familiar with classmates who had been “Cherubs” as they are called). |
Very cool! Good luck to your DC! |
| It is definitely possible to get in to NU with no interview-my DC did ED1 and got in, no interview. They are done by alumni volunteers. The “Why NU” answer seems to be the most important thing to be able to answer (I’m sure true for all college interviews). |
How last minute? Mid March? |
The senior interviews are really important. They are really for the kids that the school wants to convince to come to New Haven because they know they will have offers elsewhere. If your child gets a call for a Yale senior interview, that is a very very good sign. |
Northwestern interviews are not evaluative |

Yale grad here. I used to to alumni interviews in another city. When I moved to DC, they didn't need me. Had more than enough interviewers. This was years ago, not sure if they have expanded since to meet demand. Keep in mind, alumni are volunteering their time. It makes complete sense to me not to waste anyone's time - interviewer, interviewee, the admissions officers who read the reports, the alumni schools committee who organizes it - if the applicant is already a definite yes or no. An interview is not an entitlement just because you applied. When Yale went test optional, they said they received a huge influx of apps and a lot were not qualified. Maybe this will level out with the return to requiring tests and then more kids can get interviews. |
| doesn't mean a thing - only the fact that they don't have sufficient alums to do the interviews. You do know the interviews mean nothing? Even at Yale (where they *claim* they might mean something). Yes, I'm a graduate |
A current student didn’t sway the decision. |
No one here made any claim about why the admission decision was made. |
