They don’t have to be married for the father to be on the birth certificate.

But the child is illegitimate. Not fair to do that to a child.

There is no such thing as an illegitimate child. That is an artificial construct. Shame on you for using that retrograde term. One that has no basis in law.

PP here. I don't like the term or use it either. Nonetheless, there is often a stigma attached to the birth of children out of wedlock or whatever term you choose to use. Paternity may need to be established through testing. It's unfair to the child.

The woman is only 1/3 of the equation. The needs of the newborn child are the most important part of this decision.

Where did you see that “they” (who is they?) are working on no bank account should be owned by a woman? Link, source?

You can have two parents without them being married.

And are you really going to argue that a rapist gets to be the second parent because a baby deserves two??

As I have said: the cruelty is the point. The Republican Party is going out of its way to be cruel to women. It splashes over onto families, but the point is to be as sadistic as possible to women.

When the DNC convinces white women to stop voting for Republican candidates, then the rest of the country can live in peace.

Hilarious. Stigma by whom? Many well to do women have kids without husbands. No one gives a rat's azz if they are "born out of wedlock".

I'm glad you haven't encountered the associated prejudice.

If the current "father" is an abusive deadbeat scumbag she should have every right to seek out someone else to help her parent the child.

NP. You are ok with women being beaten by their husbands? Or staying with their husbands if they cheat on them? What if the woman is pregnant with a child that is not her husband’s? There are so many scenarios where this law is really bad. The government should not be in people’s personal lives, they’re often messy!

Look I am all for a two adult household but forcing couples to remain in an unloving relationship is really bad for their kids.

Uhm, it is 2024.

We no longer believe infants should be stamped "illegitimate" because of their parents' actions. Lose that word, it is extremely dated.

We are not living in some convent in 1950. NO ONE uses that term (which you DID use). No one asks a person they meet for the dates on their parents' marriage license. Keep up.

I don't think it is cruelty as much as control. Keep them dependent and powerless. Like Trump, "You can do whatever you want [to them]"

Those Republicans are never about the facts:

How can ANYONE reading those want to associate with this party. Really, to pay less taxes?

That is so craven.

So there are no exceptions to this?

When I was getting divorced in Virginia, my understanding that the 1 year waiting period was in order to ensure any “pending” babies were born prior to the divorce date. Which is silly and antiquated, though exceptions can be made in cases of abuse, etc.

Every woman and girl deserves the right to control her own body.

Wonderful for domestic violence no exceptions

And they are now working on no bank accounts should be owned by women

Vote red as a female brain dead

What evidence do you have about the bank accounts? I cannot find anything via google.

Wouldn't that law also mean that men cannot divorce their pregnant wives either? And presumably cannot escape their obligations to support a pregnant wife?
