Not after tenure. I guess it depends on the field. Also BTDT and don't miss it one bit. |
That's really good! |

Local/state law enforcement, Fire Service, and EMS all usually are associated with shift work outside of an office environment. That's not to say you can work only when you want to, but you'll not be in an office and will sometimes have several days off in a row, and/or can work overnight and do other things during the day (as long as you have time to sleep).
Many medical professions provide opportunities for similar odd-hours employment in a variety of settings. |
Can you say what you mean by "flexibility" = Do you mean that he wants to be able to choose when and how hard to work? Or that he wants to be doing a variety of things during the day? Or wants to be able to take his degree and skills and switch jobs every couple of years? Or do you just mean he doesn't want to be tied to a computer? |
^ Let me add: I think it's great he's thinking about this, and that you are helping him figure out a good path. Just want to understand better what you are looking for/looking to avoid. |
He doesn't want a sedentary job at a desk all day, would prefer having some control over his hours, or for time on and off. He's an excellent student, but hates school because he needs to sit all day, prefers physical activity, loves being busy, loves sports, is working as a waiter on weekends. |
| He could look into sports-related jobs (owning/running a gym, coaching, physical therapy, etc) or trades like carpentry, electrics, etc. I would strongly encourage him to study business so he can freelance/start his own business. |
Came here to say this. All the jobs listed by OP sound much easier and less flexible than a typical WFH/flex schedule white collar employee. |
Whoops I meant to say much HARDER. |
| I'd help him start a landscaping firm. It's hard work, outside, varying tasks and environments.. but leading one would require using his brain with business skills, customer service, recruiting and retaining, etc. |

I could see him doing that, he does also power wash driveways and washes cars with a friend. It's very out of my comfort zone to think of entrepreneurial things like these, as I've always been an office worker myself! |
| Some kind of sports medicine or athletics director or something, where his work is tied to the sporting season? |
| Sales. I worked 45 min today. |
