How Do you Keep Your Home Smelling Nice?

Keep your house clean and don't cook fish!

Wow! Until your comment, I was ready to bring out the baking soda. No more! I too now know why our vacuums died with the cleaning lady.

How old are you? Five?

PPs had great advice--baking soda in the fridge and trash can. I think cleaning out those two things periodically are really important. Keeping sinks clean and putting lemons down the disposal is helpful. I think another general problem is just moisture--whether it be unaired out beds, laundry sitting someplace, damp bathrooms, etc. I do try to air out but only on days that aren't humid.

BTW, the baking power thing is a myth. It does not absorb odors.

I've had great success w/ baking soda eating odors, especially in the litter box. Makes a huge difference. I haven't killed any vacuum cleaners because of bakin soda either. (Knock on wood.)

I think your question is great OP. I also live in an old house. We keep it very clean and no pets but we still get a musty smell. We can really smell it whenever we get back from vacation. Opening the windows is the only thing that really helps. I also use a vanilla scented candle (i use Yankee candle..that likely has chemiclas but I love the smell).

Our (newly purchased old) house smells like fireplace, no matter what we do. We had a chimney sweep come. We had a vent cleaner come. Still smells like smoke. Anyone figure out how to get rid of that smell?

Maybe wipe down the walls/ceiling with a vinegar solution?

Sandalwood vanilla is heavenly too! Adds a subtle fresh scent to the air.
