We also used the glue traps and it seemed to work well... we still have a few jumpers every now and then - but I would rather that then spray with a toddler.

I, too, hate crickets.

I always lived in basements (as live-in nanny, that's where you live) and I always had a stack of magazines and would throw them on the crickets.
When I ran out of magazines I'd put on gloves and cover every inch of my body with cloths and such and would get rid if the crickets under the magazines.

If I ever had to live in a basement, I would do it different. A friend found this machine that makes a really high tone and human ears can't hear. But obiously, the crickets hear is and don't like it since she never saw another cricket again.
She said, she got this sounds machine at a hard ware store.
