Counseling week

Typically counselors do not seem as knowledgeable or creative to assist high performing students, in our HO.

More academic advising needed. For even those that have parents or older siblings that can help but especially for students who do not have adults at home to guide the students.

For HS, we were told that the counselors would meet with each student so they wouldn't really talk to parents, prior to course enrollment. My child never heard anything from the counselor and zero help. I emailed and was told they'd schedule a meeting. I think they expect kids to be proactive and schedule them but a lot of kids like mine would not.

Course registration in terms of which class to take is all on families to figure out. Should be a better system with knowledgeable counselors or teachers helping students.

Nope.

To whom do you report suggestion for transferring a counselor? Students don't feel like sharing issues with a counselor because that counselor gossips students' issues to other students in the grade. Currently a 7th grade counselor.

I’d report why you want the transfer as well. That counselor needs to know that this is the perception, even if it’s not true.

And take to the grade level administrator. Or the principal, if they oversee the counseling department.

Yea right. Tell an administrator who will then tell counselor which person told them? My gosh the gossip is horrible.

If gossip is that bad, move.

The counselor should be one moved or removed depending on what the situation is. That poster's child/ren's school years shouldn't have to be disturbed. Contact Principal if grade level admin is not an option.

Are you satisfied with your HS counselor? Why? Or why not? Besides special education needs, if your kid has met with their counselor, how did your student/kid find the interaction to be? Was it for academic reasons, social-emotional etc.

Counselor not giving straight answer

Never communicated with my DS HS counselor. The MS counselor for my other son - not impressed. She was not knowledgeable when I asked her a question and was not friendly when I met her in person.

Is this at others' schools?
