What are the MCPS options for bright 3rd graders?

We supplemented with beast academy for math. One teacher allowed her to do that instead of regular math even (although that might have been a covid thing).

She's fine, btw. Her love of learning didn't die a slow death or anything. She is at a magnet and well challenged now.

This is the best answer.

Wait you think you know who OP is? There are tons of people who could post this in MCPS.

Talk to your school. There is one child in my DC's 5th grade class who already had the max for MAP-M scores so the test was pointless for the child. Teachers and kids in class knew about the child's gift in Math very early. I believe that child takes online classes with a tutor during Math time, at school, instead of being bussed around just for that time. Maybe the child's MAP-R was not as great as the MAP-M to get into CES but school did do something for the child.

OP depicted the majority of their school's students as academically challenged. MCPS need to be able to address that bright kid's needs in that environment equivalently to how they address your bright kids' needs in an environment conducive to teaching the whole class at a high level.

OP here, yes this is the challenge. There are only one or two kids in the grade who are anywhere near her in ability.

I have no clue why folks would hire a tutor in this situation, please explain.

And she is very social at appropriate times and does not “complain.” However not a single thing has happened this year that she had not already known. So there is no challenge and a lot of time reading a book while the class finishes.

I do wonder what planet the person is from who suggested playing with her friends after she finishes her work.

Basically, I have my answer. MCPS does nothing for 3rd graders who are ahead.

There are few activities that are going to grow a kids' skills and knowledge as efficiently as reading, so it sounds like she's probably learning a ton at school. Lucky girl!

MCPS has enrichments available within the curricula. They need to employ them with consistency and fidelity when students are in the position of OP's DD, whether there are many others in their class or not.

Kind of hard to do that when you have to spend 90% of your time working with struggling students.

Sure, so MCPS should be allocating resources among schools such that it is not the case that a student's needs are or are not met based upon the cohort of other students with whom they happen to be enrolled.

WOW the assumptions! If you were in SS you would know that this family could be any race and they didn’t say what their educational background was. It could be MCPS all the way. The OP was just asking about options in MCPS.

Yes! It's called WIN time. I'm happy my DD is getting this time otherwise she would have been pretty bored. Maybe this is something you can ask the principal about OP. The county is starting to roll it out.

She and another child from that class as well as a few children from other classrooms go to another 2nd grade classroom each day for 30 minutes. My DD and that small group work together to do stuff like reading and preforming a play, reading a book and answering questions together, etc. The teacher in the room is still teaching other kids so they are working as a group independently.

Sounds like WIN time (What I Need). They started it this year at our school too. Kids move around for a half hour per day and they are able to either get enrichment or remediation.

This is what I did for my kid, now in 8th grade:

1. CES/magnets, or pushing for the most advanced tracks in late elementary, middle and high school.

2. Intellectual challenge outside of school. In my kid's case, starting an instrument at 3 and doing math enrichment. Reading and writing she does on her own.

3. Testing into a more advanced math track when she lost the lottery to get into a magnet.
Taking two languages. Planning to take a ton of APs in high school, as well as keep up her competitive instrument playing and other hobbies.

4. Above all, seeing to mental health and fostering curiosity, because those can take a beating after endless school days spent reading books in every class waiting for other people to finish their work.
