Your income, HHI, and spending on “luxuries”

About $350k HHI and high enough NW (from an inheritance) that we could probably just blow it all without saving anymore, and we still don’t buy any designer/luxury stuff. Just don’t care enough. We will spend on travel, but I don’t really track it. I’d guess $10k last year.

$1.4m hhi (though just got here - sort of a strait line slope from early 20s to mid 40s).

jewelry:$0
handbags:$0
clothes: nice basics for work and whatever we like to feel comfortable. (we don't splurge on designer brands)
Travel: $20k

Realize everyone’s priorities are different, but I’m very curious about how much folks who, say, spend $10K on a piece of non-engagement jewelry are making.

Personally I make $280K, with a HHI around $400 and I still feel anxious about a $1K purchase let alone more than that!

Well, things like jewelry, designer clothing, bags, cars and the like are utter waste of money to impress others so your anxiety is absolutely justified.

Travel is worth it, as long as done within your budget and not to impress others with pictures and stories.

$400 HHI is great if there is no mortgage or debt and retirement as well as college costs are covered.

600k HHI, $7M NW. The most luxury expense is paying for kid's colleges: $90-100k/year/kid.
Other than that, pretty typical middle class life style. Not into a habit of buying very expensive things or driving luxury cars, but not highly aware of budget either.
Vacation is in the range of $20-30k/year, not first/business class unless with points.
I'd say the money is more than enough for our lifestyle. The rest of the thing is to watch our money grow in investments accounts, which is kind of boring.

I always get a good laugh out of DCUM comments. Today I learned that $400k is only a good HHI if there is no mortgage and retirement and college costs are already covered. And $600k HHI comes with a middle class lifestyle that includes $20-30k a year on vacations. Righttttt…

Still looking for the luxury that would excite me. I would probably splurge on travel--slightly better hotel, but not too nice as we would be out and about anyway.
HH in $60k, NW much higher.
My luxury is that I don't have to get up in the morning and go to work. I don't even have to work. This was always the goal.
The only material things I want are few candles, fresh flowers, good food, warm comfy clothes.

We have a similar income but don’t spend that kind of money on bags or jewelry, but do on home items like furniture and decor.

But the two of us went out to dinner tonight and it was $200. I drive a Subaru SUV, but we fly first class. I’m sure a shrink could define my behavior.

I think we are the same person, lol.

HHI of about 250k. Only debt is our mortgage. Cars are 2007 Blazer and 2017 Forrester. No designer clothes (but if I were thinner and more options were open to me that would probably be different). I do have a LV Speedy, but bought it pre- loved. We spend a lot eating out in any given week and I never think twice about it, even though I’d probably not spend the same amount on an item of clothing. Spend about 15k per year on travel and I do fly business when traveling abroad because lack of sleep triggers my illness and I can’t sleep unless I can lie down. I liked some clothing at Sundance the other day, but couldn’t bring myself to spend the money so didn’t get it. I wear diamond stud earrings pretty much every day; they were given to me by an ex. I wear a Tiffany bracelet, also given by an ex. And wear my wedding/engagement ring. Would like an Apple Watch, but have hesitated to spend the money.

HHI $450k. We spend $0 on designer bags, clothes, jewelry, etc. Drive older non-luxury cars and keep them in good repair. All family travel totals less than $10k. Our big expense is $80k in annual tuition for 2 kids in private school.

With kids in private, do you feel any pressure to “keep up with the Jones’?” The mothers at one of the private schools were looking at are always decked out in expensive jewelry, an Hermes bag, Chanel ballet flats….

There are definitely moms who show up at elementary school games with designer clothes and bags, but also many who come in normal mom athleisure. I don’t try to keep up and my kids seem to be doing really well.
