And at least we don’t stink out loud.

Two other sets of ugly Americans were at the hotel gym in downtown Tokyo screaming at each other like they were at local planet fitness (while lifting puny weights), then had the gall to leave plates and racked plates on barbells over the floor. Also, on of started a 40 minute phone conversation out loud while working out. And that ignored all of the signs in the gym prohibiting talking on the phone. How many social norms can a handful of Americans break in 2 days? So obnoxious. So crass.

Americans need to get it through their thick skulls that they're not special when traveling abroad and need to learn how to shut the hell up. No one wants to listen to to idiots. You're not in the US. Take a dose of humble pie and shut it.

Not a uniquely American trait.

You ever see Chinese abroad? I once saw a Chinese man spit on the floor of a luxury boutique (think $250K+ merch) as a prelude to lighting a cigarette.

Germans? Good lord.

Russians? FFS. It's like the Mongol hordes have been resurrected.

Etc., etc.

Ask a Japanese person who the worst tourists are. They will all say the same thing and it ain't American.
Also to the PP who bemoaned low cost flights...huh?? Japan is a pricey trip.

I admit this is unusual, but I actually like loud talkers in my vicinity because it means my own conversation is more discreet (especially eating out). They are like silly background noise. I might move away if I'm alone though as it would be more distracting but I don't get op's rage. Maybe you've been online too long or are off balance.

You’re a real charmer yourself, huh?

Never claimed to be. But at least I know to STFU on trains in Japan and never talk on the phone for 40 minutes at obscene decibel levels in public. Learn some basic damn etiquette. Unlike the US where it is about ME and F everyone else, other countries have profound respect for everyone around them, and it is deeply revered. Idiot Americans piss all over that when traveling because low cost flights allow every zoo animal from America access abroad now.

As someone who has lived abroad (multiple countries), you are clueless. There’s zero respect for the people around you. If you are harassed, assaulted or have a medical emergency, American strangers are more likely to assist. I’ve seen so many instances in other countries where people just ignore someone in need of help.

Another post from someone who thinks they’re worldly after a two week trip to Asia. SMH.

I was just about to say - I used to live in a country where Chinese tourists LOVED coming to visit. They made me feel a lot better about American behavior!

Not that I am free of bad behavior. I ate on a Japanese subway once before learning that you NEVER eat on the subway. Plus plenty of other stuff. We don't stop being ourselves when we travel.

Foreign tourists in the US aren't wonderful either.

This is true, but Japan is so poor now, they grudgingly put up with them. They hate the mainland Chinese. Yelling, eating while walking, throwing trash and cigarette butts on the street.

In Paris, you used to be able to buy a museum pass that allowed you to enter certain museums as many times as you wanted over 2, 4, or 6 days.

The pass has now been changed to only one entry per museum. Why? Because tour leaders would bring bus loads of tourists, send half in with the passes, bring them out and then send the other half of the tourists in with the same passes. Not the way the passes were meant to be used and cheated the sellers of the passes.

Those tour leaders and the tourists were not from the US. People from all countries can be ugly tourists given half a chance.

I'm a reserved person, so I have no problem with a lot of the unspoken rules of Japan, but I'm probably way to smiley. I've always heard Americans smile too much. I'm Midwestern to boot. My first time to NYC was a wake up call lol.
