Potluck as holiday party

Anonymous
As a fed potluck during an extended lunch (like 11-1) is normal. This year we were also told to bring our own plates, silverware, and cups to be environmentally friendly, which I get the intent of, but it sounded so ridiculously cheap that I couldn't stop laughing whenever I thought of it.

I resent the idea in theory, because I hate taking time outside work to shop and cook and think about what can be taken on public transit, served at room temperature since there aren't enough outlets or an oven, etc. But then I actually enjoy the part where I get to just hang out and eat a lot. So I don't know where I fall.

My boss sort of called me out for skipping our 2 hour potluck which she clearly said was not mandatory. It is a 45 mile round trip drive to the office. Sheesh.

You've clearly never worked for a non-profit.

They waste money on so much stupid sh!t and then have to send out emails on how it was a struggle year for the org, so no bonuses.

My final straw was the year when they announced that everyone would get a flat raise of 0.05% in January of the coming new year. Yes, not even 1%. And being in finance, I was privy to the fact that the c-suites were given huge bonuses that holiday season AND big raises (10-12%) for the upcoming new year.

They always have $$ for the C level.

My career and finance have been sliding backwards for many years.
It started as a younger associate at a beltway bandit in the 1990s and we have a fancy dinner with live music at Cosmos Club (?).
In the 2000s I was at another federal contractor that hosted a catered lunch in the office.
Now I'm with a 50-person company that doesn't do anything for the holidays.

The company potluck trend seems to fit in with trend of employers splurging less on their employees and everything becoming less formal.

Also I'm finance and always knowing this stuff sucks. And they wonder why employee loyalty is down the drain.
