Baseball/softball- how do kids here compete with kids in warmer climates

Signed,
Parent of two baseball players in colleges that you most definitely have heard of.

There really is no consensus on this. Kids in the DR do nothing but play baseball and they send the most players per capita to the MLB.

Also, Trevor Bauer (putting aside his personal failings) freely admits he is a terrible athlete. He would never have made th MLB had he not intensely focused on baseball (and pitching in particular).

Don't let climate convince you that your kid can't compete

Actually, Jordy is #2.

Jordy’s going to drop this year because Nebraska isn’t going to have the offensive support Oklahoma gave her.

Valerie Cagle, of Yorktown, VA, is the top player in college softball. She plays for Clemson.

Kat Sandercock of Florida State, who graduated last year and was one of the best players in college softball, is from McLean. I think she might be on the National team now.

Fair enough.

I also think there's a chance Canady ends up at the top list after this season. She was electric in the playoffs

Yes, my husband is betting on Canady, too. Jordy is great, but she is definitely not going to have AS MUCH success without the hitting and defensive support of Oklahoma.

NVGSA is not only territorial in that their so called "territory" is the entire county, but they claim that they are a community league. Then they brag about having players from outside of Fairfax County and Virginia. They hoard fields all over. They claim to represent sportsmanship, but by refusing to relinquish fields unused, they are breaking a county permit policy and also showing the opposite of sportsmanship

It is truly sad. I would register my kid for BRYC or a Little League Softball program in our boundary any day over playing for NVGSA

That said, I think it's actually good for kids to get a bit of a break so they don't burn out. Also gives them a chance to explore/try other sports.

This! Most of my DD's softball teammates play another sport in the winter. It is so good for them. And so is the break from the intensity of tournament season.

Not so much AZ because they don’t play during the summer…at least the baseball teams in Phoenix and other areas don’t play during the hottest months.

If she really really wants to go that far, put up a net in your garage for hitting during the winter and focus on conditioning. Find a league that does winter practices in a school gym or one of the area facilities.

Who does indoor practices around here (nova?)

A lot of travel teams have winter batting and pitching practice.

All of them.
