Yes! ( U Cal Davis)
He keeps saying - its like a weight had been lifted off his shoulders. Course load is reasonable and works for him. Thanks to TJ we were able to avoid the DCUM trap of getting into Cornell etc |
What is the DCUM trap of getting into Cornell etc? |
Any TJ kid taking Cal AB doesn't belong at TJ. |
What schools have which classes taught in school- not online or dual enrollment? |
Somebody has to occupy the bottom 20%. |
Not why would you think it is? I agree it's unusual (thus the gasps of horror) but they were one of those kids for whom TJ was a godsend and opened up opportunities in non-math STEM classes. Getting off the crazy train of math acceleration was the right choice for them and share this to let others know it can be done with a successful outcome. Kid has graduated Masters, is working in a bio-tech startup and fully launched. I'll take that. |
Why? Math is not the only STEM subject. |
So many kids at the base school are handling AP Calc BC and AP Physics C -- it's just that your TJ isn't anything special. |
TJ Calc BC and Physics C is 3x harder tvan base schools |
Bottom quarter of TJ class struggles to complete Calc AB minimum required to graduate, the next half complete BC in junior and take Multivariable/linear in senior year. Top 10% of the class go all the way to differential calculus by senior year. Bottom quarter miss out on not just AP Physics C but also a ton on other advanced courses for which Calc BC is a prereq. |
DP. If kids were avoiding Calc BC because they were superstars at Bio or some other STEM field and wanted more time to focus on that, I would agree with you. You seem to be assuming that for every 10 kids taking Calc AB, 9 of the 10 are great in some other STEM area, and only 1 out of the 10 is all around pretty mediocre and simply can't hack it in the harder class. I would assume that 9 out of 10 kids are mediocre and can't hack it, while maybe only 1 is a star in some other STEM area. Kids taking Calc AB who would be eminently capable of taking BC, but don't because other paths better fit their goals are fine. Kids who can't hack Calc BC, but are stars in some other STEM arena are fine. Kids who are neither of those categories (i.e. the majority of kids at TJ taking Calc AB) don't belong at TJ. |
IF that were really true it wouldn't be offered. |
I read that was a problem mostly with kids admitted under the old system. |
How do you know? |
Are you trying to say the old system admitted kids who weren't necessarily as qualified as those under the new admissions system? If so, no. |
