The punishment needs to be immediately after the behavior otherwise it’s useless w a 3 year old. If this happened more than a few minutes ago, he likely doesn’t even really remember doing it let alone give you a reason why he did it. And you need to know how to prevent it in the future not how to punish him for something that’s already over. Three year olds have no concept of money so the fact that the tv was expensive means nothing to him.
I’d do this: 1) tell him no throwing things (anything) in the house. If you want to throw, we go outside to throw things. When you throw things you can hurt someone or break something so no throwing at all inside and when you’re outside you never throw at a person or car, etc because that could hurt/break someone/thing. 2) keep remotes away from 3 year olds. A 3 year old should never have access to anything they can easily destroy/break. Leaving the remote in his reach is your fault. |
People spend $5000 on televisions??? |
They do in Trollandia. |
What kind of moron buys a $5,000 TV |
+1 You can get a nice fairly large flat screen at Costco for under a grand. TVs do not cost 5k. |
Garnish his allowance until he’s replaced the TV, this includes his animal crackers and juice boxes - everything has value.
Make him watch TV on the shattered screen so he can hear his shows and remind him why he can’t see anything. He’ll quickly learn to be careful around items he cherishes |
Yeah we pay too much for stuff in Canada. I was just showing that there are tv's on earth that cost 5K in 2023. Lesson learned op, keep an eye on the 3 year old around expensive stuff. |
The same way I would have if throwing the remote hadn’t broken anything. You have to teach your toddlers not to throw, and if they break something expensive in the process, that’s just bad luck.
In my house, (we use 1-2-3 Magic) throwing something with that much force would have been an immediate three minute break time. That’s it. Meanwhile - three is old to still be throwing things like this. Have you been consistently setting boundaries the last few years? |
They would have to get a job, pronto. |
Agree |
Who buys a $5k TV but installs it themselves?? |
You can’t punish for this now if you did not correct in the moment. |
Take it from the 529. |
Send him to work in the linen mills. A 3 year old can spool, or chase the rats away. |
Obviously I’d sell him into indentured servitude until he had worked off his debt! |
