Cancel plans for anniversary dinner in DC due to crime and hidden fees?

OP maybe a troll, be we were HUGE fans of the Wharf, but the constant weed smell and the recent armed robbery definitely dissuades from as night time visits.

Our fee is 3.5 percent added this summer. Only one customer has complained about it to me, and then took it out of my tip. Very impressive math skills. It was the exact amount. That part is not a big deal though.
I wish they hadn't wasted my time. Sat there forever , then waving me down as if I wasn't busy enough.
Why not ask about all the fees before deciding to sit down.

Agree that OP is probably a troll, but the crime issue in DC is real and scary.

Did you people not visit DC in the 1990s? While the crime rate is higher than in recent times, it is far lower than it was when I moved to Dupont Circle in 1994. I am not arguing that DC shouldn't do something, I am, however, arguing with the idea that you are taking your life into your own hands the moment you cross Western Avenue.

Agreed. A fair number of establishments are closing and specifically cite crime as one of the reasons. The H street revitalization is spinning back the other way.

Where are the fees posted? On the front door or right as you walk in?

I saw that article too. I feel bad for the restaurant owner, staff and residents of the neighborhood. The likelihood of OP being targeted going to a restaurant is very unlikely. I live in DC (though a safer part) and travel a lot and have a higher risk tolerance l guess.

Regarding fees, are you hearing they’re worse in DC than close in MD and VA? I had not heard that.

Which local jurisdiction passed a bill allowing for a 20% fee to be added to restaurant services? I think Montgomery has been mulling that over but it’s not passed, right?

Why? They intentionally opened a restaurant/chose to work in a high crime neighborhood. Shaw wasn’t safe 8 years either. Businesses investing in these neighborhoods know that and assume the risk.

Your crappy restaurant should just raise prices to be 100% transparent so that the customer can see the true cost of a meal and decide whether or not it is worth it.

You have sh!tty hidden fees to gouge the crap out of customers and wonder why they're upset? I hope everyone stops going out to DC restaurants. They are so toxic and it is abundantly clear they have extraordinary disdain for their customers. If you hate customers so much, why are you in business?

Because DC passed salary laws for restaurant workers. The restaurants are now trying to pass the cost off to dinners with all sorts of hidden fees you can't see until the end. And staff still expect tips now in top of it. No way in hell I'm dropping and extra 40% on top of a bill. It makes for a very uncomfortable situation due to all of the hidden fees and expectations for ridiculous tipping.

I don't complain, but I'm also not going back. Put the actual price on the menu and stop with the hidden bs.
