Which schools should we consider?

I was thinking of Penn State, Rutgers type schools. Too ambitions?

weighted or unweighted meaning any honors? If honors nothing but ivys off the table. Penn State is great FYI. Why not tech?

OP here. DC has taken reasonable hard courses and getting B's in them ( eg AP Stats, AP CS A, AP Calculus AB). Weighted GPA will be somewhere 3.8 to 4.0

With these stats and course rigor I don’t know why you think all UCs are off the table. UC Riverside and Merced are possible. UCSC is a reach but not impossible and has very good engineering program.

For California, look at Cal Poly Pomona which is a definite possibility. Cal Poly Humboldt is also a match. I’d also look at San Jose State, Chico State, CSU Monterey Bay, Sonoma State (fabulous new dorms), and Sacramento State.

STEM, Engineering/Some Business or Econ interests...

At most large universities, you apply to the school/college of engineering (generally hardest entry), business (generally second hardest), or arts & sciences (generally easiest, but if you need to apply directly to a major, CS in particular is likely to be the hardest admission of all). If he thinks he really might want engineering, he should start with that, as it's almost always much easier to transfer from engineering to arts & sciences than the reverse. And there are tons of solid engineering programs at flagships and land grant universities of various levels of selectivity--what does he want as far as urban/rural, hot/cold, near/far, political/cultural vibe, etc.?

Seconding this re: making sure to look at college/department admissions metrics. E.g. Boulder is a much tougher admit for Engineering vs Arts & Sciences (and w/in A&S certain majors - think physics - are harder than others).

Re U Arizona budget cuts. Yeah heard about that $250M shortfall.

Would be more inclined to admit OOS full pay

TY! will look into these.

Colorado School of Mines and U Colorado Boulder were not on our list. TY !

We missed Colorado completely, even though DC would love the weather and mountains.

+1 for RIT

High acceptance rate. Very strong engineering and design program. Good industry connections. Weather and location iffy but the pro’s definitely outweigh that.

Would Merced be a good fit for an out of state student though? I went to a different UC (Davis) before Merced was built. When I've looked it up on the map it looks very isolated.

It is growing in popularity in CA and is close (for CA) to mountains and skiing. But yes, you are correct that it is mostly Californian.

You should visit both! Mines in particular is fantastic and the rural/urban mix of Golden sounds exactly what he wants.

If you make the trip to Colorado, don't sleep on Colorado State. Ft. Collins is an hour-ish north of Boulder and a very cool town in its own right. The school isn't well known outside the region, but it's definitely solid and its students love it.

The UC’s are around $75,000 a year for oos students with no merit available. Neither Merced or Riverside is worth that.
