Some schools tell teachers that they cannot take personal leave unless they find a sub. If the sub cancels, they expect the teacher to cancel the leave. As a result, some teachers call in sick or pretend that they had a doctor's appointment. Don't know if the principals are allowed to do this, but the teachers are afraid that the admin will retaliate if they question it. |
Depends on the school. It might not be contractually correct, but some principals definitely pressure their teachers to find their own subs and tell the teacher they will not approve their leave request if they don't have one. Of course those are also the schools that teachers actively try to leave during transfer season. Like in all things, MCPS does nothing to protect the teachers. |
+1 This. I've considered subbing. I am a good teacher and need flexible work, but I won't sub for $20 an hour. It needs to be more than that. I can get other work that is easier and just as flexible for $25 to $45 an hour. |

I'm in MCPS and it depends on your admin. Technically, you should just be able to put your leave slip in. But some admin will be pissed if you don't have someone lined up or if that person cancels when you have personal leave. For long term leave they highly encourage you to find someone on your own.
In my daughter's school they have been breaking up the class to put them in other teacher's rooms when there is not a sub available. |
Please name your school where you weren’t harassed for taking leave without a sub. I’m looking to transfer. |
Oh, grow up. DP |
I am not sure why you are trying to shame me. I receive calls/emails on a daily basis from teachers looking for a sub because either they are sick or their children are sick. I legitimately feel bad that they have this added stress to their job. And it is not just one or two schools. This at the elementary school level. |
not the poster you are responding to but i have had multiple administrators and never had leave denied. I’ve worked for some principals who tried to bully people over taking a day without a sub assigned to the job. We had a well established staff that was not easily intimidated and knew their rights so it got the principal nowhere. They learned pretty quickly that we were taking the leave regardless of whether or not they “approved” it. |

I like how they make sick teachers work at home instead of rest and the teachers at school are punished by having their classes disrupted. The kicker is principals will write bad reviews about the teachers if the learning environment and classroom management are out of control and that goes in their permanent file.
This profession is not recommended if you want basic human dignity and respect. |
Can you name the school? I really need to move to some place sane. |
It was almost exactly one year. The last quarter of 2019-2020 and the first three quarters of 2020-2021. -NP |
The sub rates are negotiated by the union. Why doesn't the union push for higher sub rates? $20 per hour is ridiculous and just means that teachers will lose planning periods to sub. |
Lol again...ALMOST ONE year isn't even close to the two years the previous poster claimed. That is the point. And it still wasn't a full year...yes, it came CLOSE. |
All of them but yours apparently. |
Because after all the anti-racist audits, leader in me SEL training, and electric busses, there just isn't anything left. |
