For perspective: We spent about 10k (maybe a bit more) on a 2-week trip to Florence, eastern Italian coast, Split, Mostar, Dubrovnik, Munich, and Copenhagan. We have younger kids so we squeezed into one hotel room, but did splurge for some of the AirBnb's/rentals. 10k inclusive of airfare, lodging, excursions.

As for 5 cities in 14 days? Total doable. It just depends on your travel style. I would get bored doing 5 days in one city.

Europe is more compact than the US. So while spending 5 days in Vienna, one can easily do day trips to Salzburg and Bratislava (that’s 3 days Vienna & 2 day trips). So instead of 5 cities, OP can do Vienna, Budapest and Rome with day trips added from each. This way, there are also less packing/ unpacking & check in - check outs which makes it more pleasant.

Don’t do this OP. This poster is insane. The train from Vienna to Budapest is 3.5 hours - that’s 7 hours on the train plus visiting the city all in 1 day. Same goes for Salzburg (3 hours on train each way and you’ll see nothing of the town in just a few hours). Plus the next day in Vienna will be shot if you need to recover from these “day trips.” Trust me, don’t do it.

Another tip - if you must go to Zurich, take a flight. The train ride from Vienna to Zurich is long, and I personally wouldn’t waste the time in such a tight itinerary. If you skip Zurich, fly from Vienna to Rome. Do NOT take the train. It’s very long, uncomfortable and if you’re unlucky and you get an Italian train (as opposed to an Austrian one), you risk having no AC, malfunctioning toilets, ancient eats etc.
