Sure they do

+1 you should know this is coming and from which schools if you've done your research.

Holy Cross gives parents a surprise essay (or at least they used to) after their kid submits an application. Very poor taste…

It’s a bait and switch tactic which, in other contexts, is outlawed by consumer law.

Oh my gosh yes! One college permitted/requested and additional letter of recommendation and it could come from the parents. Forgot who that was.

Oh yea. My favorite last year was Cornell wanting my kid to write a 1000 word essay to stay on the wait list. This was pretty late in the cycle so I am pretty sure they knew they were not admitting many kids at this point.

Then there are also the extra honors college essays.

Same with Michigan. My kid could not have been more stressed by that point. Really annoyed with that school.

It's truly disgusting stuff some of these schools do to 17 / 18 year olds.

Did did they do the essay? Where did your kid end up?

Did not do the essay. Very happy at UMD.

I didn't know this about Michigan. Please tell me more about their shenanigans

DC submitted app to Case this week for EA. He has received portal login to track status but nothing about additional essays. Can someone clarify when or where this essay would show up?

They don’t have a supplemental essay for Case, which was nice!

I thought it showed up last year after kid was deferred in EA round.

How long do they have for the extra essays?
I agree that there is some logic to it, but I do remember mailing (!!) my applications off right before a trip, like hitting the post office on the way to the bus station. What if kids were doing something similar?

It was only one extra essay at a Denison and there were a few weeks to submit, I think.

Isn't this the definition of a bait and switch? Given that kids are paying to apply it seems super sketchy (unless they offer a refund of you don't submit extra essays).
