I am confused what anyone is surprised about - Sidwell has never been some sort of football powerhouse so what is anyone asking about? They have a team and that team plays other teams that are in theory appropriate competition. That is more true some years than others. So what is happening with sidwell football? Nothing new!

They actually dominated the MAC for the better part of the 1990's and 2000's after they dropped out of the IAC and went to two Single A DCSAA football championships about 10 years ago, winning one of them.

They aren't far removed from football relevance, but they had once coach to who stayed there a decade too long and then had another leave basically after being hired during COVID.

Our public middle school is bigger than Sidwell and struggles to field a team.

Football used to be a great game, until the size requirements and health risks got out of hand.

Sidwell struggled with basketball in the past and now look at them. The basketball program is ranked #16 in the country. This took time and I believe the school will now turn its focus on football.

More than 1 million kids played 11-man high school football in the US this fall and participation is up from last year.

In fairness, it is much easier to decide to create a national basketball powerhouse (especially in the DMV which is recognized as a massive basketball talent incubator) where you have a total roster of maybe 10 vs. football where you have a 50 person roster.

There really is no way for Sidwell to catch-up with the WCAC schools in football. No private honestly competes against the WCAC powerhouses...even the WCAC has cleaved between Good Counsel, SJC, Dematha and Gonzaga and the rest of the WCAC.

There will never be a goal of Sidwell football "competing" with the likes of the WCAC.

Fielding a team and competing for the MAC and DSCAA, sending a few kids a year to D3 schools and an occasional D1 would be a successful program.

As it should be. Sidwell is an academic powerhouse, first. Leave the football factories to the likes of the WCAC schools, and similar institutions.

I am sorry, but the Sidwell basketball players are no different from the WCAC football players...you just need far fewer of them.

Many of the Sidwell basketball players go on to be NCAA academic all-americans in addition to being top athletes in their crafts.

Some of them are NCAA academic all-americans, but most are not. Show me some support for "many"...don't just list a couple. Also, show me many that are the tops in their crafts.

I don't know why it is so hard to accept that the majority of top, revenue sport athletes are not academic superstars.
