Lessons in Chemistry TV show (Apple TV)

Just finished watching this w my teen daughter. It reminded me of Hidden Figures and the Disneyfication of historical stories.

I read the book and it was close to the book sometimes but the whole African American subplot and Highway 10 through LA was ridiculous and heavy handed.

Overall I liked it. I thought they had a good Calvin and Elizabeth. It’s not an incredible book to begin with.

That subplot was the WORST. The book was so perfect, no need to add that.

That's how Brie Larson acts

It’s a good story, but the book read like a middle schooler wrote it. I hate these books and movies where there’s no nuance to the sexism and racism. I appreciate the female empowerment storylines, but wish there were better writers.
Having said that, I like the series better than the book which I couldn’t even finish.

Brie Larson is very good at showing each emotion but not good at concealing the effort in her acting. I never forget in watching an actor portray what they think the character would feel. She never disappears into the role. It always feels exceedingly effortful and they is very distracting.

Oof. My typos are distracting!

In = I’m
They= that

I haven't seen the show yet, but that's sort of how the author makes the character sound in the book, like she doesn't quite pick up on emotion and nuance.

+1 Spectrum-y. I thought Brie Larson, whom I don't always like, was great in this.

SAME

I loved the book but I haven't watched the show yet because I dislike Brie Larson.

I'm PP. I finished the series and ended up quite enjoying Brie Larson. She wasn't exactly as I had pictured Elizabeth Zott when reading the book but she was much better than I had expected.

I thought the kid who played Mad was phenomenal. I've watched a few series with kid actors in pivotal roles recently and she was hands down better than all of them.

I loved the book and I think the series was very well done! I loved it. My one issue: I laughed so much while reading the book but didn’t find the same humor in the series. I’d never seen Brie Larson in anything before but she was exactly as I had pictured EZ.

I can’t believe people are praising the casting. 6:30 absolutely was not a doodle!
