Northeastern in Boston

I don't think UVA Wise is the obvious, bone numbing, mind blowing, persistent point of contention and preoccupation for OP.

An acceptance rate of 7% and sat averages on par with northwestern and higher than a couple of the ivies, can anyone explain without getting too into the weeds why this school is ranked so low but has extremely high levels of selectivity?

How is this school generally perceived in the DC area?

Northeastern is one of the most applied-to private schools, together with schools like NYU and BU, from the DMV area.
Schools like NYU also hit hard, but their acceptance rate will continue to be a single digit.
BU defended pretty well, but it's still relatively low-ranked in the 40s, yet it maintains relatively high level of selectivity.

Northeastern is popular because of several major factors it's doing well: salary outcome, peer quality, location, retention/graduation rate, etc.
It's top-notch in these major areas.

If you look at private schools, there's really not much change, and Northeastern is still in a good position.

This has to be the stupidest response I’ve ever seen. Why would you take out all of the public schools? With them included, Northeastern is 53rd.

Bizarre omission.

Not everyone wants a public school, for their own reasons, and that is fine.

That doesn’t change the rankings though. NEU is 53rd among national universities. Not 31st. 53rd.

Applicants and particularly, accepted students to any top schools, including NEU, do not consult rankings for their educated decisions.

NP. The new ranking formula emphasizes factors that pushed up most publics. Many in this forum may feel that those particular factors are unimportant for them personally.

If that were true for NEU, they would not have felt so compelled to game the ranking system.

Whatever NEU and any other of the many schools do to legitimately "game" rankings is of no issue, to those of us who know which schools are the better schools.

You may wish to ask yourself why rankings matter so much to you, and why you keep posting about them.

I don’t bother looking at schools that aren’t in the top 50.

I am sure Northeastern is an OK school with a good coop program but they definitely gamed the system to move up the rankings. Glad to see they are now more where they belong because as at least for tech, I do not believe they are that prestigious.

They have no essays so it's a popular school to apply to. Also they give out fee waivers. They admit lower stats students who they guess are likely to attend to satellite campus and then do not count their statistics. They accept large numbers of kids on ED to also improve their yield. They tried to woo other colleges to improve their peer ranking. In 2023 they admitted kids for 3-4 years at satellite campus then completed changed course mid-cycle when people complained. If you want you kid going to a school like this, go for it.

This school is very controversial on here since any time there is a thread there is a person that insists all the negative comments come from one person, when in reality there are many people with less than positive view of the school.

On the hand: It probably did game the rankings.

On the other hand: It’s a respectable school in Boston that gives out great merit aid and is obviously great for students who want to climb the corporate ladder in New England.

If some people have gone there or have kids there and have specific criticisms, great.

But I think the hate directed at it purely because of the ranking gaming is silly. Most students aren’t looking at it because of its USNWR ranking; they just want to go to a nice school in Boston.

So, that means that the schools down at least to about 60 schools must all be great schools.

Because NEU is a fine school. If NEU ranks 53rd, then kids simply have a lot of great colleges to choose from.

Apparently. OP is having such a tough time with this fact, that OP has to post about Northeastern on the regular.

OP, you need professional help. Anyone that posts about the same topic regarding the same sub topic, on DCUM, on a regular basis, needs professional help. You can get this post deleted, but it does not change that simple fact.

You are the one that needs help. Or do you work at NEU? How do you know that the OP is simply not a 2024 parent with a legitimate question?

It’s not. What I’m saying is that it’s ridiculous for someone to remove public schools from the rankings because they think the rankings are inaccurate but then uses the same rankings for just the private schools is ridiculous. The rankings are either reliable or they are not reliable. To say “we will use these rankings, but take out the public schools because these rankings favor public schools“ is the stupidest thing I ever heard.
