Top Stats students that had difficult admissions last year

My high stats nephew applying for Chemistry (white male) with a 3.9 UW GPA and 35 ACT along with some great ECs (including paid research) did not get into a single UC they applied to (7 of them).

Not surprising, since as noted above, UCs do not consider race or test scores. 4.0's are common. I have no idea how UCs determine who to admit from out of state.

I would be interested to know where else she applied and what her results were, if you can share.

Statistically speaking 80% won’t get into top schools.

Their admissions are better if they understand basic math and apply accordingly.

I know Asian males who got into Stanford, Harvard, Yale, CMU, Cornell, Northwestern, Duke.
A lot of high stat kids don’t get into top privates. And some do. From all backgrounds. What I noticed is that many kids either were shut out of top privates or had multiple offers.

NP. This is something I worry about, the uncertainty of which group my kid would fall into. Either seems possible.

At my DC school, many kids only got into one top private (and many rejections later), so this is just anecdotal.

white male 1580 SAT (800 math) 4.7W GPA (4.0UW) Eagle, national CS awards, patent for a product he designed, leadership roles and volunteer roles. APs in all core subjects with 5s on exams. Math through multivariable calc. Teachers proofed essays and loved them. CS major
No: CMU, Stanford, Wisconsin, Washington, Boulder (offered exploratory studies not CS)
Deferred then WL: Ga Tech, Rice, UT Austin

Yes to all "safeties" but I don't believe in safeties for CS

Attending and happy at Purdue.

The UC’s will not accept test scores from anyone, they are test blind.

This is all goes back to the original response... focus on writing amazing essays that are personalized to each institution. Show, through this writing, how your experiences and performance will add value to the institution. Grades, amazing ECs and top test scores are great but the essays are the bow the ties everything together. Stop whining about your kid's ethnicity and put your energy into shaping those essays.

One more thing I forgot to add: rec letters help, too, so be strategic in selecting the teachers that you request them from. And, make sure your DC meets with his/her guidance counselor to talk about the rec letter -- provide notes or a resume, if possible.

Northwestern is T20. Northeastern is not. If kid couldn’t break into T20, I’m assuming she is at Northeastern.
