Agree. St Andrews is not HYP. But then again uva and w&m are also schools for people who can’t get into top schools.

Some data points: In 2021, the undergraduate St Andrews acceptance rate was 8.5% (based on data by UCAS). The university received 21,405 applications and granted places to 1,820 students. For those thinking American applicants are a shoo-in, even the imperfect data published in the Bethesda Magazine's college destination list shows that it is not a sure thing for UMC Bethesda area students at top schools

15 applications from BCC, 2 accepted
1 application from Blair, 0 accepted
7 applications from Richard Montgomery, 2 accepted
1 application from Whitman, 0 accepted
2 applications from WJ, 2 accepted
6 applications from Churchill, 3 accepted
4 applications from Wooton, 1 accepted

This. No one thinks it’s HYP. But the two kids I know who went there got into UNC OOS, UVA, NYU and U Chicago. So really good schools. But they really wanted to go to school abroad, and that was a major factor in their decision.
