Have you ever recognized someone from real life on here?

I'm 99 percent sure my neighbor posted a thread bitterly complaining about people in their neighborhood who have XYZ job and WFH and are lazy because they are able to be at the bus stop to pick up their kids and are done early instead of working. The job titles they gave were very specific and are exactly what my DH and I do (I have a niche job that also means I start and finish early b/c clients are in Europe).

It’s funny. “Drivelers” seem completely unable to tweak ANYTHING about their language and just repeat the same things over and over. You’ll even find that on DCUM in a meta sense: people who keep starting the same thread on the exact same topic and are easily recognized because they’re so fixated on certain details.

This definitely happens on DCUM, but some of you who think you can spot it are wrong sometimes. I've started threads on here and then been immediately accused of "posting multiple threads" on the subject even though it was definitely my first time posting about it. But I've learned that when someone is convinced you are another poster, there is basically nothing you can say to dissuade them, even if you tell the to check with Jeff.

There are some self-appointed DCUM sleuths who are not as clever as they think they are.

Yeah well nothing is 100%. But DCUM is plagued with certain infamous drivelers.

Yes, a couple of parents from schools my kids went to and go to post all the time. Same stuff with enough detail about their kids. Also, they were (and are) recognized at school as being “that” parent so the dots are easy to connect.

My neighbor posted here about an issue that she had discussed with me IRL and in a neighborhood chat group. Each time she used the same specific phrases to describe the situation. Nothing embarrassing, beyond the embarrassment of being known as a DCUM poster!

I discovered DCUM because of the mcps forum. I am an immigrant and found DCUM very informative in navigating mcps and the college process for my kids. The other forums got discovered by me once I bookmarked the 'recent topics' url.

Initially I did not understand that people do not admit being on DCUM. I am not embarrassed about it so I frequently guide people to one of the posts I have written. I have never met anyone in real life who have admitted to even hearing about DCUM and for me that is hilarious.

Confirmation? You just assume, and you could be 100 perfect wrong.

And odds are extremely high they are 100% wrong.

When I lived in DC, I had 5-10 friends who I knew posted here and they knew I posted here and we actively talked about it. It was mostly about school stuff and was non-contentious. I recognized a couple of them by their writing style and then just asked them "is this you?" One time a friend was sure that a post in the relationships forum was me (it wasn't, but I could totally see why she thought it was).

I never have. I recently came across a comment that I swear could have been me. Down to tone and writing style. But obviously it wasn’t. You just have no ideA. I agree with the person who mentioned familiarity bias.

Just once. Very specific circumstances that I knew the story on, and the details weren't changed. Not embarrassing at all, just knew it was her. It was in answer to a question, not her post.

I’ve posted bread crumbs before hoping someone I know who I think I know is here, sees it.

Don’t worry, I did.

Sometimes I see moms from the neighborhood listserv post the exact same question/complaint on here, on the email group, and/or on the FB page.

A mom I met on maternity leave through a new mom's group once told us a story about how she had second-guessed the initials she was giving her kid because of a secondary meaning/connotation. The story sounded familiar and I realized I'd also seen it here.

No, and I'm here a LOT.
