Encampment has started in our downtown SS neighborhood

Make sure when it happens again (and it will), you report it. You made a serious mistake helping them, unfortunately, and I do not think this will resolve soon.

I agree with this. And repeatedly contact building management about safety.

And I’m sorry to say, I’d probably consider moving. It’s pretty clear that jurisdictions don’t really care about the safety of tenants particularly when it comes to handing out vouchers for people who need more intensive services. I’m likely going to have to move soon and I’m basically planning to buy my way out of this by spending enough on rent that the building doesn’t have voucher tenants or tolerate encampments out front. Or rent a small house.

But police can also direct you to that department, so when in doubt, call police.

Call the police. Contact your city and county representatives.

America is sleepwalking into a massive homeless crisis. I doubt we will get anywhere beyond bootstraps as a solution, sadly.

They can’t occupy a public sidewalk.

Exactly right. There are trolls on this board who trash MoCo at every opportunity but the county will address this problem if you bring it to their attention. I speak from personal experience. But they can’t fix a problem they don’t know about.

Good luck OP. I always feel terrible passing people trying to get money on the sidewalk or stop lights. But through some of the volunteer work and later my MPH, people made it clear it is much better for everyone to donate to resources that are better able to provide help.

Where in Alexandria are there encampments?

I’m not rich. I live in one of the old, lower income apartment buildings. We’re a four person family in a two bedroom unit. I don’t want to get hepatitis from diarrhea stained clothing flung under my car or have my daughter sexually assaulted while doing laundry.

Ignore the jerks OP. No sane person at any income would want to live next to diarrhea pants and pantsless laundry room creepers.

Reporting to you from LA and I agree. I made the mistake of feeding them. More came.

Calling police for public indecent exposure is appropriate

In neighborhoods where the police patrol, it would have already been noticed.

+1. I’ve lived here a long time and have never seen them.

A normal police patrol is not enough. You can never just assume that the people who know how to deal with an issue have been properly notified.

I’m sure OP fashioned herself a liberal until those diarrhea soaked shorts ended up under her Subaru. Hilarious!
