1-bedroom apartment with kids?

Personally I would have us all sleep in the bedroom. Bunk beds for kids, twin for me. I like a defined sleeping area.
If people are over, kids friends, my friends, whoever, I want a living room/dining room space.

Depends on the age of the kids, especially since op has two boys.

All I can comfortably afford for now is a 1 bed/1 bath apartment, and that’s fine. I’m just wondering, if you live in this situation, how do you find privacy/your own space?

I’m going to give my two boys the bedroom to share. We will forego the dining room and instead eat meals on tray tables or around the coffee table, so I can put a bed/dresser there for myself.

How does this layout work for you? Any other suggestions?

What’s your budget?
I suspect that you are being very picky about the area

I wouldn't try dividing a living room with curtains or dividers. Most apartment living rooms are so tiny there really isn't enough room, and it will look sloppy anyway.
I'd either just have all 3 of you sleep in the bedroom or use a daybed instead of a couch. You could even get a daybed with a trundle underneath so that people aren't sitting on your bed during the day.

A daybed is a good idea. I would also use their closet for my own clothes.

There are heavy curtains that attach to the ceiling used to separate a room. There are also coffee tables that open up to tables for four. Tons of ideas for small spaces.

Totally doable. I agree with the curtain or screen right around your bed. Be a total minimalist and have as little stuff as possible. Under bed storage, no clutter. Kid stuff stays in the bedroom so the living room stays a clean eating and family space.
