Blair for gifted kid, but not magnet

If truly “highly gifted” your kid would have been offered a place in the magnet or one of the other programs.

No, because there are more qualified kids than magnet slots, and the magnets are too far a commute for many people.

This is wrong. Very smart non-magnet kids with impressive matriculations. And even in the magnet the kids PP describes are very few. Most magnet kids are not in that category, and now even less with the new magnet formulation that picked up a lot of kids who did not go to TPMS. By far the most popular college destination for magnet kids is UMD.

+1 I don’t know why many on dcum assume Blair magnet and W go to the top tier. Look at the data. Almost none get into the top tier—most go to UMD-type schools.

Except the actual data that's published shows that both Blair and Richard Montgomery too far better than the W's in terms of elite admissions.

Such a big chip on that shoulder.

Needs to be big to hold all the facts.

Okay so I’m going to call your bluff. Since when does MCPS list name and school attending after graduation? Or even percentages who attend a place like UMD. I’ve seen (sometimes) a noted student article on one student - but that’s it. I don’t have dog in hunt. Disliked MCPS vibe for my kids so left it pre-pandemic.

So, why do you comment on every thread if you left?

Nothing wrong with kids going to UMD. Its a great school and affordable for most of us.

Why are you even on this forum?

Ruefulness.

Prove it. I call BS.

Please show us the data that top MCPS grads are not getting into UMD. It has gotten harder for everyone to get into UMD (more people are applying for the same number of spots), but, I don't see any evidence at my school that the top kids aren't getting in. Remember, grade inflation has hit MCPS hard. Just because they have a 4.0+ doesn't mean they are a "top" student.

Yes, hard facts like this often don't sit well with the delusional W parents.

NP here, basic but related question. Can anyone kindly point me to a primer on the Blair magnet selection process, or summarize it, or point me to another thread where this is covered? How did it change recently to take more kids not from TPMS? Any figures on how much more demand there is for the magnet program, than slots available? It sounds like smart kids not getting in is a fairly frequent thing.

Thanks in advance-- a search on this forum with "Blair" and Magnet" yields over 450 entries, and the posted link from Blair, below, isn't super informative...

MCPS has an outline on its site for last year's process. In the past they listed the factors. That may be there somewhere.

More like schadenfreude.

Don’t kid yourself - I like to check back on every neighborhood I once lived in. TP isn’t the only one…it’s called being curious. You, as a likely Blair parent must have passed this quality onto Larlo, no?

Disagree. If truly highly gifted and applied they would have got a place.

Last year we were told about 900 kids applied for 100 spots.

I agree that there are more kids who could handle a magnet than there are slots, but if OP’s homeschool is Blair then commute isn’t the barrier.

I don't think the TPMS rumor is true. A large percentage of the kids that were at the open house in the spring were TPMS magnet kids. Rumor was more than 40-50 accepted.
