Just Google "Air Quality [zip code or city]" and it will tell you. I also get text and email alerts when it's in the red from Fairfax County government the same way I get government closure notices and Amber Alerts. If you're not in Fairfax County, I'm sure your local government has something similar you can sign up for.

In terms of checking the air quality, pretty much any place I check the weather will also show the air quality alerts, if there are any.

Most of the folks that keep their kids in are fat and probably get scared of food colorings, nuts, etc. It's better to live life in moderation. That said I'm not moving to Delhi or anywhere where this is a daily occurrence

Moron.

At red/150, I will go out of my way to avoid spending time outside and if we need to walk more than a couple blocks, I will make everyone wear a mask.

I will note that today it's been yellow all day in DC, and that this morning it was down in the 50s/60s. Capitol Weather Gang definitely predicted it would be worse so I'm glad I actually checked and didn't just assume the worst.

This is not about you boo

Obviously you folks haven’t seen inside of human lungs exposed to pollutants. Avoid if you can.

My kids have asthma. We skip outdoor camp on code red days. I WAH and kids are in middle school so it’s not a big deal.

Ummm have you ever heard of indoor exercise? Keeping your kids indoors during a few days here and there during code red or purple isn’t at the expense of exercise and a healthy lifestyle. They can exercise indoors, eat healthy food indoors, and avoid lung pollutants on the days that it’s bad out. I think the real fail is exposing your kids lungs to damage, especially when pediatricians are recommending what the guidelines already are.

I've never once considered this at all.

I tend to agree. Not about air quality (I am conservative with respect to that) but in general, I feel like people will come up with any excuse to not take their kids outside. Kid has sniffles (for a socially distant activity like hiking), too much work or housework (when they spend half that time on their phones anyway). I see so many parks and walking trails empty on beautiful days!

Ww are an outdoorsy family, but rest is important. I think one of the worst parenting choices my mom made was never keeping me home sick - she was so proud I never missed a day of high school and kept up a million activities. Of course I was sick and run down all the time. I let my kid take sick days and we cancel plans to rest on the couch if sick or even if over scheduled.

Just like 1 pkg of smoking won't hurt you in a material way, right?
