Best part was the Cruz Azul players thanking Messi for scoring on them after the game. I've never seen a team so happy to lose before.

There was a spike in interest when Beckham came to LA but it was just temporary. I kind of suspect the same thing will happen with Messi.

The problem with Messi though is the the does not currently, and might not ever, speak English very well. He's also just not a very big personality. Most of the foreign fans that came with Messi will likely leave with Messi once he retires for good.

Lol, I’m pretty sure no one GAF that he doesn’t speak English. He has almost 500 million Instagram followers. His talent is so transcendent that it pretty much wouldn’t matter if he was mute.

For marketing purposes it does matter. Especially if you're talking about a sustainable fanbase even after he leaves.

It depends if MLS doubles(which is very likely) attendance and viewership MLS will be roughly the same size as NHL. That means more money and more big name players which would increase viewership and attendance. He could change the league.

Maybe the timing with the next World Cup will help, but this happened within a day of him leaving PSG, and they're now down 3 million.

My goodness, Messi is going to destroy this league.

I hope he has more fun here than he did playing for PSG. So glad the MLS is graced with his presence!

No you see MLS is just more physical and athletic vs anything Messi has seen. Messi destroyed every world class defender over his career. GOAT

Soccer translates language, what language(s) he speaks or doesn't is completely irrevelent to the impact he's already and will have on MLS. He won't speak in commercials and rarely does at this point anyways. Not sure it helps him, playing in MLS (he literally has nothing to prove) but it will help the league. I only hope its long term, and not only 1-2 years.

Of course it's relevant. If a measure of his impact is how much he helped grow the game in the U.S. , then surely speaking English would be more helpful. Not saying he can't have an impact without it, but it shouldn't be dismissed.

There are several montages of a mass exodus of fans leaving the stadium as soon as Messi was subbed off.

So the interesting thing is the 4 out 5 of the top professional sports leagues by revenue are in the US-NFL(17 billion), MLB(10 billion), NBA(9.5 b), Premier League(6.4 b) and NHL(4.9 b). MLS is 10 at 1.4 billion behind Ligue 1.

With Messi and the next World Cup in the US you could see MLS revenues go to 3 billion which would put the league above Serie an and below the Bundesliga. There is a lot of potential for growth in the US but you have to have draw of stars players. Increase revenues would allow the league to go after the star players. Maybe the Saudis will jump in?

The big problem is Apple TV contract. You need games on free TV.

Rock star status. Antonella is going to have to make some changes soon.

It would be like Wemby deciding that whe wanted to be a Knick and that the supermax wasn't enough so TNT would have to throw in more and everyone just saying ok.

Can tell you do not understand how big Messi is. Name any player in any sport or any celebrity in the US and Messi is 5 to 10 times more popular.
There is no one in the world who comes close to his popularity.

I mean...Ronaldo does.

Ronaldo is much more entertaining.

Ok...that's a nice opinion you have. Many people disagree.
