Just returned from the Greenbrier

It’s not a Marriott. It’s owned by the Justice family. Jim Justice is the governor of WV so he can’t be on the board because it would be a conflict of interest but one of his kids is the CEO I think. There is a small casino.

The only casino I've ever been to that has a dress code, which is ridiculous.

The Greenbrier rooms look as if they were designed by someone's grandmother.

We like to golf, so we went once 20ish years ago. Once was enough.

It's always recommended on here for getaways and moms' weekend or romantic weekend, etc, but it seems like I could take my time and money and put it towards something more (and better).

I saw it recommended here again today, which inspired me to post. I can’t fathom why anyone would want to spend what they do here. The rooms are terrible. Worn carpet and mattresses at $400/night.

It's like walking into Grandma's house - dated and worn and old people playing golf.

My grandma would not have tolerated people playing golf in her house.

My family has a great time in the Poconos...Skytop Lodge

Also in the Poconos- Woodloch

The furniture is atrocious.

Do you play tennis? The facility there is really nice. I don't play, but my spouse and child do.

I’d love a dress code in a casino!

I'll be the voice of dissent. I like it there specifically because it is different than most hotels, including the decorations. The outdoor pool is nice and the van is really unnecessary unless you're very old or very young. I'm a fan, although they do nickel and dime you to death.

Do they still have an afternoon tea? I heard about that a long time ago. It was supposed to be really good.

I think it was a Marriott property for like 5 min, (ok a couple years), but it has not been for a while.

The Greenbrier is a classic hotel rooted in tradition, and honors a time before cellphones and computers when people were entertained by quieter pursuits. I’m 50-something and mourn the passing of manners, dress codes, and real conversation. Thank God places like the Greenbrier still exist!

The decor isn’t my style at all, but it should at least be kept in good repair! That’s what I’m saying. It isn’t. Service should be good. It wasn’t, the concierge was particularly unhelpful.
Despite the dress code, people weren’t particularly well dressed. It was an odd mix of people. Many who looked to be professionals at a conference, several large family reunions that grandma and grandpa were probably paying for, and then some locals from WV.

Just wanted to share my observations and what we heard echoed from people in our group since I hear it mentioned so much. My vote is a resounding no.

I looked at the website based on DCUM recommendations and really could not understand the appeal. It's SO overpriced for what it is!!!

Exactly. You are the precise demographic for the Greenbrier. And your demographic is precisely why the rest of us avoid it
